full size pickups show improved mpg

Where does the 5.7 hemi fall in all this ? I never hear of a high milage hemi, do they not compare in the long run.
I agree with T100 regarding 1st and 2nd gen dodge trucks getting better milage then 3rd and 4th gen dodges. In the gas world trucks have gotten more hp and better milage, why is diesel going backwards. New 4th gen cummins dodges get terrible milage. My old 2nd gen with nv5600 and 35" tires would click 21-22 on the highway all day long if you kept it at 65 mph or less. Yes hand calculated by fuel used when filled up to full each time.
The EPA has done a real number on the emissions of diesels. I am ready for a 12 valve, you can keep anything that has a egr and dpf, let alone diesel exhaust fluid i a light duty truck.

Because of "Momo's". Mo-power, Mo-speed, Mo- towing. A 300 HP 6.0L V8 single turbo diesel engine would get fine mileage. But that's NOT enough power to win the market share of diesel idiots. So we have these fire breathing way overpowered diesel trucks with piss poor mileage. Sure the EPA isn't helping. But todays big trucks are heavier than ever and setup to tow things that would snap a similar truck from 20 years ago in half.

Compare a 2012 F350 to a 1986 F350. Our new trucks are monsters. I test drove a 2012 F350 diesel with 8000lbs behind it and it was insane. Tons of power! The divide between what a gasoline truck is intended for and what a DRW diesel is intended for is growing. The diesels are more capable. But if you're not towing huge weights or running massive tires, the gas trucks are the way to go if you can restrain yourself from driving like a "Momo".

Personally, I prefer gasoline guzzlers. All I need is a SRW and rarely tow more than 6000lbs. I'd never get my investment back with a diesel. I can't even count all the times someone has brought me thier "gutless" 5.4L, 6.0L, 6.2L gas truck for me to test and tune. I hook up 10,000lbs and go for a ride up hillier country with no problems and can't understand thier complaint. These things ain't Mustangs. But they ain't exactly lacking power either. (except for a few Dodge 5.8L's, some of those really were gutless, like worse than a 4.6L Econoline van!)

The big three ain't after fuel economy, and judging by the people I see driving diesel trucks, and how they drive them. I don't honestly believe anyone really cares. If I was Ford/GM/Dodge, I'd ignore fuel economy all together and just concentrate on gimmicks.

Bottom line for me and the power argument: If a 5.4L Ford F350 can pull 10,000lbs up a hill without dipping below the speed limit, how can I complain about power? Yet people do, all the time. I don't get it. And that's exactly why we have gigantic diesel engines getting pathetic fuel economy. Keep in mind that a 80,000lb big rig only has 15L of displacement. Barely more than twice a diesel pickup but can gross 4 times the weight and still get 4-6mpg

So back in 2010 I bought a 5.3 Silverado half ton. The week before I mounted the camper shell I got about 21 mpg. Now Since i have all sort of things mounted to it and get 15 mpg on the highway. But....... I installed a Banks Power Stinger system (intake, exhaust and computer) and run synthetic Amsoil.
