Howdy, folks. New to the board, but couldn't help myself from throwing my $.02 in.
I've had a 2000 Land Rover Discovery II, a Jeep TJ, and I currently run a 2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4x. I've put the Disco through a fair bit of its paces out West, including rock crawling in Moab and some pretty gnarly forest service roads along the Continental Divide. I've had the Jeep through some pretty heavy winter snow conditions and some backcountry trails. And, I've had the Xterra through some abysmal winter conditions and through some washed out dirt roads. I've enjoyed each of these vehicles for different reasons, but if you ask me what I would replace my current Nissan with...
it would be a Nissan Xterra Pro-4x with manual transmission.
Seriously, there's not much being still produced that has everything I'm looking for in a vehicle. If you want a stout 4x4 platform with decent towing capability and good performance around town, your options are severely limited. About a year-and-a-half ago, when I was looking for something a bit larger to replace my TJ, I had it narrowed down to a Toyota FJ, the Xterra, and a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I wanted so bad to like the FJ, but one test drive turned me off: it's road manners were abysmal. I liked the Jeep, but thought it just required too many compromises to live with day-to-day.
I immediately took to the Xterra... and never looked back. A good set of tires and, even without any more modifications, the rig is capable of getting me almost everywhere I want to go. And, if I do want to go further, there's a decent aftermarket to help me get there. It's durable, capable, reliable, versatile, and surprisingly agile around town and on the highway. My only concern is that Nissan appears destined to discontinue one of the few remaining legitimate SUVs being built.
