Fuso syncros

While I was at the Fuso dealer today picking up a starter, I asked about the manual transmission syncros. Mine are worn. The parts man said they have replaced a number of syncros on Fuso manual transmissions. He thought it had to do with their use as snowplows but when he learned mine were bad he rethought the cause of the problem. He said typically the transmissions need nothing more than syncros. He said parts ran less than $100.

Kerry, One of the guys who works here has an '02 637 and the syncros were gone. Symtoms were >> it was crunching in and out of 4th gear when you shifted and jumping out of 5th when you backed off the accelerator pedal. It's still in at the local Fuso dealer now getting fixed. Parts alone came too $2800 AuD. We must really get ripped off in Oz.

He quoted me almost $5k for a new transmission and transfer case. Might not be a bad price with parts costing that much. Strikes me that jumping out of 5th is more than syncros. Price quote was strictly for syncros themselves. He said nothing else typically went wrong with them.

Yep. Probably. I'll find out in a couple of days when he gets the bill. $4800 AuD was the price here for a reconditioned one IIRC. Originally we thought the big nut had come undone on the main shaft . That's behind the round plate with the 4 bolts at the back of the gearbox .. up high.

Hi Kerry,

Apparently, a circlip came off the main shaft and was letting everything slide up and down which did a lot of damage to the shaft and the synchros. The shaft was the most expensive bit at $960 alone. Most of the bearings were replaced too and of course the seals including the rear main on the engine. I'll let you know about the synchros when I see the bill.

Regards John.

Wow, that's one expensive shaft. Sounds like a fluke occurrence.
Mine grinds in and out of 4th if I shift quickly. Slow shifts are usually ok and I double clutch on quick downshifts on steep hills so it's more of an irritant than a serious problem.

Yeah. I have heard of a few where the rear nut (I mentioned) had come loose but that was a very easy fix. Will keep you posted . See ya. ZZZZZZZZZ
