My 2003 3.4L engine in my Tacoma is getting up there in millage and am looking for a reputable shop that dose engine replacements in Northern California. It's got 270K on the clock and we are setting cash aside for its replacement. I live in Truckee and would like to find a shop close to home but would consider establishments as far as the Bay Area. I absolutely love my truck and not really interested in getting a new one. Thanks in advance.

A lot of the remanufactured engines sold by the big engine builders are cheap for a reason. I would stick with a factory motor with a factory warranty.

Thanks for the quick response. So you think going through a Toyota dealership maintenance department is better? I wonder what the cost would be?

I would go to a dealer unless you can find a Toyota specialist in your area. I am sure in the bay area there are a few of them. Just insist on a factory motor/warranty. I would estimate 4500.00 but I really have no clue its just a guess.

Dealer quote me $6500 in '11 for a 3.4. Southern MN dealer. I threw a rod cap bole through the oil pan.

Wow! $6500 is getting up there. I was looking at some shops that carry a 3 year factory warranty for $3500 but as for the quality of work. I'd love to send it to Diesel Toys for the conversion but at $22K that's not going to happen.

Depending on the mileage included in those three years if the company fubars something up it will show up in those first three years.

I have been pondering this question myself! My 2000 3.4 now has 320,000 miles on it.

Give Safari LTD a call they might be able to steer you the right way. I used them as a sorce for my steering rack replacement, great customer service and promt shipping. I think there trust worthy.

Toyota doesn't do crate motors, at least what the parts guy told me. They'll do installs but the engines aren't directly from Toyota, they are 3rd party.

My Toyota guy in Tucson quoted me $3500 install with a used low mile Japan engine from their supplier.

Mine is getting up there too, 293K now...I dunno, the whole truck is getting clapped out, I put $4000 into the undercarriage this past spring, wondering if I made a mistake by doing that... those new Silverados look nice...

True, I replaced quite a bit under the truck. I think I'd rather put money into the tacoma rather than have a truck payment for five years.
