FZJ80 Full-time 4wd good or bad?

To be technical it's Permanent 4WD as there is no part-time option. A Full-Time 4WD has 2WD and 4WD modes which you select. And the 4WD mode can be used all the time due to a transfer case with built-in differential/coupler.

The beauty of Permanent 4WD is that it's there whenever you need it. Nothing better exists.

I don't think there really is an "official" definition of part time and full time 4WD, but I'd explain it the opposite way. Part-time 4WD has 2WD and 4WD options (the 4WD is engaged on a part-time basis), whereas full-time 4WD is always in 4WD (4WD is engaged full-time, or permanent as you said). Full-time 4WD has no 2WD mode, otherwise it would be part-time.

Sure is.

Part-time = Not for use on the street as driveline will bind due to the lack of a Center differential.

Full-time = For use all the time. Center differential allows for use on the street without driveline binding. User selectable.

The above descriptions are pretty much well known. It's Full-time and AWD that get confused a lot.

Permanent = No 2WD mode...otherwise is Full-time 4WD.

All-wheel drive = Operates in 2WD mode until slippage is detected. Then a center coupler automatically engages power to the other axle as well. There usually is no 4-Lo range on AWD systems.

This is how I define them, as well. My wife's old Jeep Libery had "Part Time 4WD" written right on the transfer case lever (and I think a "Part Time" light popped up on the dash, too).

However, I believe "Full Time 4WD" can be used for any vehicle that has a center diff, whether or not it's got a selectable 2WD/4WD option.

Agree...though there's a reason makers use the terminologies of Permanent and Selectable.

Selectable (by the driver) = Select either 2WD or 4WD mode
Permanent = Non-selectable...all modes are 4WD-only
