Garmin 276c and Voice Prompts

Well I found a deal I couldn't pass up. A brand new Garmin 276C for $375 CAD!! Need to wire it tomorrow. Heading into BC and possibly over as far as Seattle next week.

The bare wire cable that comes with the unit has two wires named "voice". Has anyone tried to hook these up directly to a small speaker to get turn by turn instructions?

I know that you can get a 12 volt adapter with the speaker built in, but if I can use a generic speaker for cheap I prefer that! I do need to buy a bunch of new software now as my old Mapsource is just getting too old anyways.

I doubt it will have enough volume to be usable without an amp, but if you feed it into your car stereo aux input, it might work great.

My 276C goes straight to a small unamplified speaker, and the volume is actually fine. I have the volume set at 7; anything more is too loud.

I like to change the speaking language for something different :peepwall:

- indispensible in the cities and towns I do not know - including the detour function

Those voice prompts will be cool for about 15mins...
Mine is new enough that event the "External power lost." still sounds cool to me....

...especially in languages I've never even heard of!

Guys, one more question:

I've got one of these speakers setup for my ham radio...

It's a Cleartone speaker that just connects in with 3.5 mm mono plug. What would happen if I put a T-connector off that and plug in the GPS voice output to it?

I'm not a speaker guy, so I don't know what problems that might cause if both units try to send sound to the speaker at the same time.

Thoughts?
