As of now im running 4.10's and 31's on my 97 xj auto tranny. Im looking at bumping up to 33 10.50's when these tires wear out my question is will i be ok with the 4.10's or should i regear to 4.56's this is my DD and exploring rig so i fo drive in the mountains quite often.

If it were me I'd leave the 4.10s and focus on other things like tune (intake, exhaust, etc.).

Doing that you may never find a need for a re-gear on-road. If you notice issues off-road use that as an excuse to re-gear the transfer case.

FWIW, I run 4.56s with 265/75-16 Duratracs and they measure about the same height as a 33" BFG AT. I kind of wish I had 4.10s to get the RPMs down a touch at highway cruise. I'm thinking about going to larger tires as a work around.

You have the gears already, try it and see what you think.

Another .02

I've regeared twice, first was to 4.10 with the 31's then I went ahead and skipped to 4.88 when I went to 33's. I now have 35's and was glad I went all the way to 4.88.

My own experience was that with all the extra weight I have added building my rig along with the extra drag the larger tires made, I was having a hard time staying in high gear lock up with the 4.10's. There just wasn't enough power at the lower RPMs to maintain 65-75 mph speed with the slightest grade increase.

I've read of plenty of others who have even left stock gears and 33's, it just hasn't been my experence that it works.

I guess you could always wait until you have the final tire size in place and then decided. Re-gearing isn't cheap, so hopefully you'll only have to do it once.

Thanks,
Fred

With all the added weight of bumpers, winch, armor and 265/75s I need to re gear to 4.10s bad. I have a question if you all don’t mind. What are some good companies to go with?

If you mean who to use for regearing Joshua at Crawler Tech has a good reputation. They are located on Vasquez street in Commerce City. They are about one mile north of I-70. They have a web site.

I'm sorry I ment good manufactures of the gears themselves.

Yukon's are good, I have superior in the rear and motive gear in the front they've done their job with no problems.

Sorry to thread jack, but I figure it's better than starting a new gear thread.

I'm looking to buy a 2013 JKU 6 speed manual, my local dealership has one exactly like I want except it has 3.23 gears. They said I can order one with 3.73 gears and it'll be here in 6 weeks.
Now the issue is, registration on my current car is due ($208 + about $50 for inspections). In your opinion do you think it's worth the extra $450 (cost of registering my car + cost of upgraded gears) and waiting 6 weeks or will the 3.23s be sufficient?

I plan to upgrade to 255/85r16 tires, but no lift, and it will be my DD 90% of the time with a dozen or so camping trips throughout the year.
No real rock crawling, but plenty of trails.

I have 3.07s with a 5spd and 31's and have a tough time holding 65 on a decent grade. I'm looking at going with 4.10s and it will help with milage too.

You will not get gears done for 450 after purchase. I would wait My 2012 sport as 3.73's and they work well.

If you know you want to put on larger tires (anything over the stock ones) you'll want to re-gear. I drove a 2012 auto with 32s and 3.21s. It wasn't that bad. But you could tell they were a tad low - and from what I remember hearing the auto has a lower ratio than the standards (although you might want to look that up).

But regardless, if you know you're going with a larger tire, wait for the one with 3.73 gears - I can't stress this enough. It's an option when you order (maybe $75?), but would cost $1500-2200 if you do it later... You may find that 3.73 still isnt' enough... but it will still be light years ahead of what 3.21s would be.

My 00 XJ (4.o/AW4) has 4.56's w/33x10.5 KM2's. Perfect combo for DD'ing, or hauling my expo trailer w/RTT & a weeks worth of gear, riding mower on 5x10 utility trailer, or fully laden pop-up with Jill and the dog.

The gears are Motives and work just dandy :safari-rig:
