gearing taco

idk why i am so anal about my gearing but i am planning on doing an arb and some 32s or 33s and was wondering how bad the stock gearing would be im not worried about the speed i just dont want gas mileage to drop too bad. im still debating to just follow this tacomas path with 31s and rear arb and ome sus. and just call it good. but if i regear thats another like 700 for gear install and the additional cost of the tire idk if thats worth it for an inch or two.

I have an 01 4runner, same motor just a heavier vehicle and I run 255/85/16. It makes a significant difference, but not enought to regear unless I had some extra cash. Mileage is down a couple MPGs.

I had a 00 tacoma too and ran 32x11.50 BDG muds on it. The mileage difference was small.
My brother has your exact truck, but a 99. He runs 32x11.50 BFG All Terrains. The difference in MPG or acceleration is very minimal.

$1200 is a more accurate estimate for regearing a 4x4 tacoma. 4.56 is adequate with 33's, but still lacks some on the hills.

well yeah i know i was just adding the 700 for just the front diff the rear arb setup is gonna run a little over 2000 and if i reagear its gonna be like 3000 for the whole truck and arb. see the thing is i just want the rear selectable and air tank was gonna e lock it but would cost just the same if not a little more. so i guess im just gonna run some 31x10 bf muds with a small lift it could use a suspension refresh bad bowed in rear leafs. but thanks for the help

Based on 20,000 miles a year and a 2mpg difference, you would recoup your money in 3-4 years.

I have 4:30's on 255's and I'm saving for 5.29's. You would love the 4:88's I bet.

I've gone from stock -> 265/75 BFG AT -> 255/86R16 Cooper St's on my '04 extended cab 4x4. I can't honestly say that my gas milage has gotten any worse on average. I started off getting about 17-20 depending on driving load, and I still get that. There is certainly less noticable power in 5th gear at cruising speed though. Towing now often requires moving into 4th for even minor hills.

At highway speeds I actually believe i'm getting better milage than stock because of the lower rpms when I don't need to be flooring it to maintain speed. Around town its worse however getting those big wheels moving and then burning it off stopping quickly. I have considered re-gearing from 4:10 as well but have decided the money might possibly be better spent on a supercharger and fuel mods to maintain my good cruising milage and adding some torque when I need it.

This has been my experience. I went from stock to a 265/75r16 to my 255/85r16. I get better milage on the highway than I ever did before. I just accelerate a little slower in town and I can still get what I was getting before. I just realized you have 3.91s. I have 4.10. I would regear if you go to a 33.

My mileage dropped about 2 MPG going from 31/10.5-15 MT/R's to 32/11.5-15 MT/R's. ('98 Taco w/ 3.4L, Auto tranny, 102000 on the clock)
