Gen 1 starter relay location

I have 3 gen 1 montys 87 swb, 89swb and recently purchased 91 lwb. The 91 has intermittent starter fuctioning. When the ignition key is turned on for start there is clicking from a box in the passenger kick plate area before the door. Is this a relay in the ECM or the starter relay ? What is this 6'x6' box. I have not yet checked the intermittent switch at the transmission or starter connections. anothersteve

My 87 with the 2.6 had the relay built into the starter. I replaced the starter and the problem was solved. 1.5 years and 15k miles later its still starting every time.

Thanks for your input Cosmos. My 85 2.6 is the same as yours. The 3.0 s have that 6"x7" unit for the automatics. I have the fsm for 89 but no mention of location that I could find. It is either the ECM or a remote relay. This is on the 91 auto 3.0 LWB
