Aside from valve stem seal issue these trucks are as bulletproof as I've seen. My only true gripes would be that wind noise on the highway and heat transfer through the floor on hot summer days. A/C can keep up, but it requires more fan than I like for extended hours in driver's seat. I know the heat comes from the floor as I often drive in summery with flip flops and slip them off once underway. I can't do that in Montero, floor gets uncomfortable. My band-aid is heavy rubber mats but it could use more heat shielding underneath.

I have been reading and researching and realizing Gen 2 / 2.5's are pretty solid and reliable rigs. I originally wanted one when I was in the market for a SUV about 4 years ago but Gen 2's in general were hard to find and I was in a time crunch. I was also looking at Montero Sports and having no lucking finding a decent Gen 2/2.5 I ended up buying a really nice Sport. I loved it..it was a great truck, but I eventually wanted something bigger for my future needs. Plus in the next few years as my kids get older I want something a bit more capable for off road adventures and camping with the family.

So far the reply's are comforting and verify my conclusion that Gen 2's are solid rigs. I just have to find a decent one:smiley_drive:

Gen 2.5 - Bought at 180k miles, not well cared for by prior owners. Salvaged Title. Drove it hard for 3 years, but put a lot of effort into it. Still died at 210k miles. Required an excessive amount of maintenance while I had it (IMHO).

I brought my 96 2.8 liter Pajero shorty over from Japan 3 years ago. It had 34000 km on the clock, I kid you not. It is like a new vehicle. Built like a tank. Love it.
