Gen 2.5 3.8 Swap

Toasty

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
I bought a 3.8 intake for my 3.5. Figured I'd make it all fit now in case I ever decide to go full 3.8. I'll probably have to take a chunk out of my hood, but that's just an excuse to practice my welding. My truck is going to look like an extra from Mad Max, but it should go like hell.

Your truck is also a Gen 2?

I imagine your Gen 2 being equipped with a V6 from the factory has more wiggle room for the larger cylinder heads?

The Mighty Max had the older 12V SOHC heads. There's a ton of room in there. The 24V SOHC is a little taller, but doesn't look to be a whole lot wider. I bet the DOHC would fit in there nicely too.

My truck is also a Gen 2. This is it. For now :sombrero:

The gen2 4x4 trucks do sit quite a bit higher than the 2wd versions. Front is also torsion vs coil. The 4x4's have surprisingly good clearance. Mine is also a 5 speed manual. There were a couple produced in 4x4 and v6 with auto, but not many. I believe they used an updated version of Chrysler's 904 trans.

As Jeff mentioned these is plenty of room in the engine bay. The only obstacle is the firewall being so close. Might make for some tight clearances, but I think we are ok.

Not sure if it would be any help at this stage, but I have a spare ECU for my Pajero Evolution (6G74 DOHC MIVEC) sitting in my parts bin so if you guys need any pics let me know. Ditto for under hood of the Paj Evo.

Really fun to watch the progress of you pioneers on this thread. Someday these builds may be historic, in our circles anyway... :D

I wouldn't mind seeing under your hood.:ylsmoke:

This build has that goal in mind. The 3S group has overcome some large obstacles with our ECU's. Hoping to bring that knowledge across various Mitsubishi platforms.

Hey Gents,
I have been researching the MIVEC swap for well over a years now. I even considered the 1UZ but ultimately felt the MIVEC swap would be the easiest. Just a standard 3.8l would be the easiest but where is the fun or frustration in that? There is nothing that is well documented about doing this swap into a Montero but there is enough for me to think it's possible.

I purchased my block through carp-part.com and had it shipped to Seattle from a wrecker in Wisconsin. It was $950 all in for a MIVEC with 42k miles on it from an Eclipse GT. All of the accessories are off and I am in the process of adding 6g74 parts back on. One problem I have run into is there is a part mounted to the back of the left rear head of the MIVEC that protrudes far enough that it would require a hole in the firewall to fit the motor. It would protrude through the firewall by about 4", see attached pic. On the 3.5l there is a cam plug in it's place but you cannot swap them. I have tried. This isn't an issue with the car guys since all of their installs are horizontal. I am at a stand still until I resolve this issue. I should probably look at getting a manual for this so I know what needs to connect where and what the part is. Until then I will work on other repairs.

What year is your engine? Early 4G Eclipse engines had MIVEC two solenoids. Later models only had one. So that might be an option. A more difficult option might be sourcing the solenoid housing from a 2007+ Pajero.

It's a 2006 if I remember correctly. From researching I could not find a MIVEC option for the Montero but there were plenty of 3.8l motors. The wreckers wanted double or more than the price of my motor for a non-MIVEC.

Looks like the Eclipse went to the single solenoid and smaller pressure housing in April of 2007. So you might want to try to track down parts from a 2008 or later Eclipse. Parts from a 2009 or later Galant Ralliart would probably also work.

The Montero went out of production in the US at the end of 2006 with the non-MIVEC 3.8. Overseas, the 2007 Pajero kept going, and they added the MIVEC 3.8. Finding one of those being parted out, and then getting parts shipped to the US, would probably be a big pain.

Good call. I think you are right about that part being a solenoid or actuating them. It has to do with oil pressure I know that much. Good call though. I will see what is available for 08'. This is the only thing holding me up so far.
