Yeah I saw this on eBay a few weeks ago. It looks like a pretty clean swap. I have enjoyed my 4d56 swap into my 1983 Mitsubishi Pickup so much I am thinking about doing a 4d56 swap into a Montero.

Hmm, don't put such ideas in my head, although the price of diesel may quickly dismiss such ideas.

I'll have to come take you for a ride in little brown. Once you feel the power that little 4d56 puts out you will want one. When I drive 80mph on the freeway it feels like I am going 50mph. It is so weird.

The 4D56 is disgustingly underpowered in these things, and that is at sea level, might be fine in a mighty max because those are light, but in a paj/monty they suck pretty bad, though once up to speed they are ok for cruising. If you want to put a diesel in i'd go for the 4m40T,they've a nice bit more useable power and torque.

I don't get the whole wanting to swap in a diesel,I got a 6g72 24v for parts in november, and it is great, much quieter, smoother, more powerful and refined. I'd have it any day over a diesel only putting petrol in it here would have me bankrupt! The diesels are clattery, smoky, dirty to maintain, crack the head at the slightest bit of overheating, slow and only really have useable power between 1500 and 3000RPM,after that they just make a lot of noise and nothing else, and then with the mitsubishi manual gearbox you're just bringing pain on yourself, those things are softer than cheese, and sloppy as hell even when they are good! Only good thing I can say about the diesel is the torque when the turbo comes onto boost is great if they've been tuned.

By the looks of the one in the picture he has had to get a fair bit of custom work put into it,most of the ancillaries have been moved and have had to have been custom fabled to suit. It's very well done though, and fair play to him for doing something different

I think you are misinformed about the 4d56. Several versions of the 4d56 make significantly more power and are more refined than the 4m40 diesel engine.

The 4d56 I have in my Mitsubishi Pickup is not the version you are familiar with. My 4d56/D4BF is quite, clean and quite refined. In a first gen Montero the 4d56 with an intercooler would be more than enough power. In a second gen Montero I would look at getting a direct injection version of the 4d56 to insure I had more than enough power. These newer 4d56 have nearly 300 ft lbs of torque. The 4m40 only have 230 ft lbs of torque.

I think it's really cool....but the 18 MPG doesn't seem to make it worth it to me when you factor in the the rest of the hassle of parts availability etc....if it was 25+ mpg it would seem to make some sense.

4D55....what kind of MPG do you see in your mighty max with this motor?

You can't really compare an old style mechanically injected engine to a direct injection with a VNT turbo,it's two completely different generations of technology,if people on here are going to be throwing a mitsubishi diesel into their car its going to be a mechanically injected one, otherwise it would cost a fortune and be nothing short of a PITA to get it to work properly.

The mechanically injected 4d56 was a fairly bad move in the Mk2,mitsubishi had to gear them so low that at 100Km/h they are pretty much out of their power band same goes for the Hyundai galloper, and if you gear them a bit higher they cruise better but get upset by hills. They were mainly aimed at farmers that would probably just be tipping about towing stuff.

You can tune a 4d56's pump and boost and it will be way more drivable, but it has to be on boost to use the extra power, which makes it thirsty, however it would give a standard 4m40 paj a bit of a fright, however i've done the same to mine, and a few other small things, and it is enough to give a 03 3.2 did a fair run for it's money,However by doing all this you're working it harder, and increasing the chances of blowing it up.

I'll give the devil it's due,the 2.5 in the new L200 is quite nice,it doesn't seem like the same engine at all really, but it isn't exactly going to drop straight into a mk2,same goes for the new pajero though, took a 09 for a spin a small while ago and it was great, and TBH was better set up for drivability than the L200

But what I don't get is people wanting to replace a nice v6 petrol engine for a diesel engine,it's a step back in most cases. The 2.5 engine doesn't sound too much like a tractor when it idles, but if you compare it to the V6 it is very agricultural. The 2.8 idles louder but once it is driving the noise isn't as intrusive, but the 2.5 is screaming at anything over 2000RPM,meanwhile in a V6 you can drown out the noise from the engine with the heater blower! The diesel pajeros are more of a work vehicle they can tow pretty well and run on anything, but there is no real reason to go out of your way to have a diesel engine when you already have a petrol engine

You are right, the 18 mpg seems to very low. My guess is the engine is on it's last leg like many of these JDM take outs are. This 4M40 should be getting mid 20's if it is running correctly. Maybe it just needs a good tune-up. The only way to properly tune these older diesels is to use a dyno. That way you can see the data in real world numbers rather than just guessing. Using a gauge that screws into the back of the pump not as effective as a dyno from my experience.

I have several little Mitsubishi engines. I have a 4d55 in my silver 1985 Mitsubishi Pickup and I get 35-40 mpg on the open road. This truck has 33" tires, solid axles and 13" on lift so it is not so mileage friendly.

I have a 4d56 in my brown 1983 Mitsubishi Pickup and I get 25-30 mpg on the open road. This truck is completely stock. I think this truck still needs to be timed properly by using a dyno to optimize fuel economy like I did with my silver pickup. Also the engine is very tight and needs to be broken in. There are 5-6 other tricks up my sleeve for optimizing mpg on these little 4d55/56 engines. I think I will be getting 40 mpg out of my little brown truck in no time. I may need to open up the exhaust to 2.5 exhaust and a free flow muffler. Have the head ported and polished. Add synthetics oil after the engine gets a few more miles. I may change a few settings inside the injection pump.

People do a lot of things that there is "no real reason" to do. I happen to completely agree with what you are saying (for my own vehicles) but also agree with the folks who like to do it for the "challenge" or just to have something "different". Even at 25 mpg the pay back time in terms of fuel costs would be obscene but for anyone who likes this is a hobby, the economics aren't important. There are enough people out there laying down cash for diesel conversions that some can find it "justifiable"

I like cars/trucks/vehicles, what have you but it isn't my primary hobby and I happen to like quiet, clean running cars so I'd never fork over the cash for an unnecessary diesel conversion. If I was driving around the world for real I'd call it necessary but I'd find a factory diesel in another country. That said, this conversion is "cool" and someone is going to buy it.

I like busting my *** to haul my butt up mountains in sometimes dangerous conditions and skiing down. Whole lotta folks don't see the point...doesn't matter, I like it.

Point is, they do it just because they want to...and that's all that really matter.

True though, when I read 18mpg I was rather underwhelmed.

I am not even in the planning stages of this project at this time. I am just brain storming. It will need a lot more planning before I go through with anything. I would really like to convert a gen I but I may be better off just importing one. So much to think about.

If it's anything like this guy's truck: http://rides.dieselpowermag.com/ride/1210731/4d56-t/1991/mitsubishi/pajero/

...4D56T, manual trans, running 14psi - dyno @ 87whp, 150wtq...

Then I'm not interested. lol.

Sure, the 2.5DT makes 50 lb/ft more than the SR's petrol engine - but at the expense of 100 less horsepower. I don't know if it's worth the tradeoff for me.

I have not seen that one. It looks really good. I would drive it. There are a few thing to take into account here, he is talking about wheel hp. If you do the conversion he is making 100 hp and 165 ft lbs of tq or more depending on the dyno he used. While not overwhelming, with 5.29 gears this power will move that truck just fine. My only concern would be the top speed.

My little 1983 has no issues doing 85 up long steep grades on the freeway but I would like to lower the RPM's at freeway speed to optimize fuel economy. At 65 mph on the freeway I am at 2900 rpms. I would prefer to be around 2400-2600 rpms at 65 mph. I also believe the Hyundai D4BF (Hyudai's version of the 4D56T) makes significantly more power than the 4d55 and 4d56T engines I have driven in the past. My little 1983 pickup used to have a rebuilt 4d56T and it could not keep up with traffic on the freeway going up hills. Also passing power was non existent when the truck had the 4d56T. With the D4BF, my 1983 Mitsubishi zips along like 2009 Jetta TDI that is rated at 140 hp and 236 ft lbs of tq. Both my jetta tdi and my 1983 Mitsubishi weigh 3200lbs so they are very comparable. It will be interesting what the D4BF dyno numbers come in at. I would not be surprised if the D4BF makes 110-120hp and 180-190 ft lbs of tq. Manufactures under sell the there hp and tq numbers all the time to avoid law suits.

If I had a little crystal ball it would reveal that the more people realize what fantastic little motor the D4BF is the more it will be used in swaps. It's a pretty easy swap the D4bf into anything "Jeep" or "Mitsubishi" related.
