Hi all, been a long time lurker. First time poster. A little background. I bought a 2003 Montero Limited last June with 150k km (93k miles). Since then I have replaced:

-All diff and xfer case fluid with Amsoil SG oil.
-OEM Mitsubishi Diamond II transmission fluid.
-Valve cover gasket, cam o rings, intake plenum gasket.
-Timing belt, water pump, tensioners, serpentine belt.
-Both rear hub assemblies.
-Wire and spark plugs.
-Front and rear brake pads.
-KYB gas-a-just front and rear
-Brand new Cooper ATW 265/75/16

My intention was to keep the Monty for a long time. Only issue was it consumed about a quart of oil every 1500km which from what I've read is borderline acceptable. Anyways about 2 weeks ago it developed a very loud knock. It sounded like a spun bearing. My family mechanic has confirmed it to be a loose wrist pin on cylinder 4. Motor will need a rebuild or swapped. I've been quoted 18-20 hours of labor @ $60/hour for the swap, which I can accept. The only problem is I've called all the auto wreckers near me and none of them have the 3.8 6G75 in Canada. A engine rebuilder nearby quoted $5200 for a complete rebuild with a 2 year warranty. I've yet to find a re-manufactured engine in Canada in my search.

Are there any other swaps that are relatively straight forward? Perhaps the 6G75 from an Eclipse? I've been told any of the 6G family Mitsubishi engines will drop straight in. The body is in great shape with zero rust and I would like to keep it, but not at $6000+ cost.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Be the first one 3.8 Mivec Swap to do it on a Gen III. We'll wait here until you're done.

Lol I wish. You may have to wait a longgggg time lol
