Gen 3 Custom Rear Bumper

so, beginning of May I was rear ended on my commute home from work. I had wanted a higher clearance bumper, so took the opportunity to get one made by a custom fabricator here in New Hampshire.

here are the results:

WOW! That is one of the nicest one-off bumpers I've seen! Attention to detail too, like the way the fender flare extends into the side of the bumper. Great results! I like the angles too.

Turned out well...it looks good. Are you going to keep the stock muffler. How come he didnt continue the sides down a little more to cover that rear unibody panel that is on the sides? other than that I think it turned out great.

not sure why he didn't continue it down further. I have to say, this was not the smoothest experience I've had getting custom work done. took 2 weeks instead of the one he quoted - that I can understand, but he would tell me it would be ready to pick up, I'd call and confirm (he's an hour from my house) and he'd say - oops, xyz happened and it isn't ready...
he had a large off-road event he was coordinating down the road and I suspect that had his attention more than my bumper. Oh well, lesson learned I guess.
The bumper itself is top notch - but you are right about it not covering the lower unibody. Perhaps this calls for the sawzall? we'll see...

as for the stock muffler... hadn't thought about that one yet. I will likely get squished at somepoint, so no need to replace just yet. I'll wait till it takes a hammering.

lol...ya i just eliminated that rear muffler completely...there really is no need for it and its in the way. I hate to hear that happened on the build with the fabricator. I thought about cutting mine too and then rewelding in something up further to patch it and seal it back up and still keep the strength. I just continued my bumper a little further down 1-2" to cover that up.
What thickness is the metal....did he use 1/8"?? Like I said before I think it turned out great....just sucks that you had a bit of a sour experience in the build process.

yup - 1/8th inch plate.

I think I'll likely just paint the pinch weld under the bumper the same semi-gloss black he used on the bumper to camouflage it...

so is that last "muffler" actually just a resonator? I had a patherfinder (loved that truck!) that had the same thing - resonator after the main muffler can.

another question monstero - what kind of lift are you running with those 34" tires? is it the normal OME lift coils?

1/8" will hold up fine then, my sides are made of 1/8" and have slammed it against a rock hard and nothing but a scratch when my rear let loose on some wet off camber rocks.

Ya its just a resonator to further "silence" it. I have heard it doesnt really sound louder from the guys down under in Auz when removed. When I took mine off I also took off the suitcase in the middle as well and added an aftermarket to further streamline the underside, since it was a rock magnet I found.

Yes I run the HD OME setup all the way around and am able to fit the 34s. Its right at the limit or size....any more and you would be rubbing. I stuff the tires "Massive Articulation" (LOL) quite often and dont get any rubbing in any direction on the fronts.

food for thought... My truck is an 03 but only has 40,000 miles on it. I bought it last summer with 26k on it. I have to get some rear suspension components replaced because I can't get it aligned (parts frozen) - I figure if I'm having some of that stuff replaced for alignment, perhaps I should just go for the HD OME kit and have it installed at all 4 corners at the same time. :Mechanic:

Now, how does one broach that subject with the wifey? :Wow1:

"Honey....they just needed to be replaced." The handling was waaayy better after I got mine done. I was very happy after I replaced em. You have low low miles...thats a great find. I bought mine with 35k on it in 04 and now it has 120k but its not driven but maybe 50 miles a week now so I've slowed down on racken em up.

Did he design it himself? Or do you happen to have measurements to it. Because it looks amazing. I would love to have this. My XLS is the same color, I would go for this in a heartbeat. Question about the recovery hooks, are they just a supplement to the two that are normally on the car, or did you get rid of the standard ones and need to add the new ones to have some?
