Gen 3 Montero Speedometer not working

Hey all,

During the polar vortex and again this AM, the speedometer on my beloved Montero stopped working. Not sure if this is 2/2 to the Chiberia type temps outside, speed sensor is going bad, or the gauge itself is just giving up. The last time this happened a month ago, it spontaneously resolved on its own. Any ideas what it maybe?

Grab the FSM for a 2003 Gen 3 Montero from the link my signature. The vehicle speed sensor diagnosis starts in Section 54A, Page 32 (54A-32).

It may just be a bad connection somewhere.

Have you ever removed the instrument cluster? Of it has been removed before take it out again and press gently on the center of the Spedo

What he said. My 02 was inoperable when I got it. Popped the clear portion off to polish it, performed the R10/R12 solder fix (for Temp/Fuel) and re-installed properly. Presto! Working instrument cluster, works for 01-06
