Gen III Montero- Timing Belt Replacement Interval 60K, 90K or 100K?

I have found reference to the timing belt replacement being 60, 90 and 100K... 60K was specific to California... HUH?

Anyway who knows what it actually is?

What happens if the timing belt breaks? Valves get bent? Nothing more than inconvenience? Thermo-Nuclear Catastrophe?

Thanks.

Depends on where you are. Cali is 60k. Only use Mitsu parts even the water pump (every 120k for water pump). Replace your fr/rr cam seal too. They are interference engine so it will be costly if they break. All my tbelts are done at dealer but it is worth it. Now at 207000 miles and no problems.

thank you @ alex. I'm looking to for a Montero Gen III, found one in Alabama, at 89K- Tbelt has not yet been done. I will have to drive it back to Colorado. So I am trying to figure out what I need to do.

You would have to do it regardless of mileage due to age, anyway, so factor it in no matter what unless you have documentation that it's been done.
