Gen2 overheating when driving slow hills

I'm with Toasty on this. Fixing your A/C fan won't fix your cooling problem.

I agree, but I'm hoping running generic fans with no shroud was causing the heat issues. I ordered a Volvo fan and shroud, so hopefully that'll fix it and replacing the AC will help. If I still have issues I'll go back to stock clutch fan. If it persists, I'll be looking into tearing the engine down and inspecting head gaskets, water passages, etc.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Yeah you could have a bunch of build up in the water passages, I had a motor once that had so much fine dust in the cooling system it had settled in the coolant passages. For what it's worth dust gets in through the coolant recovery tank, you can put a brass filter on the overflow hose and it will keep some dust out when it sucks coolant back in.

it's been over a month, any updates? mine decided to heat up in traffic but i turned AC and it went back to normal, then again on highway until i turned AC fan. How to diagnose what's the issue?

Any recent work done to the engine?

Sorry guys. I ended up accidentally poking a hole in the new CSF radiator and bought a Spectra radiator as a temporary fix. I mounted the Volvo fan and shroud to a toggle. It fits pretty tight around the pulleys but moves a lot of air. I did find the AC fan to be bad and replaced it with a 12" e-fan on a toggle switch. I've driven it about 5 times and it hasn't overheated at all, even on the sections where it would always overheat. I think it was partially a old clogged radiator, along with not using a shroud with my fans, and having a faulty AC fan. I feel a lot better about having a strong radiator fan now for slow climbs and not relying on the clutch fan running at low rpm off engine. I have a camping trip this weekend with a 10 hour drive, so that will really be the test.

no, it's been acting weird. Last Monday i went to some trails and everything was good, not even a bit hot(all day) until i got stock then it got warm just above half point. Got home washed the radiator and engine bay, drove around the town and the next day drove it to work - all fine. Only yesterday it got warm 2 times, 77F outside. I checked my radiator fan for bad clutch but not sure if it's good - after i turn off the engine it spun for about 5 seconds. I was under impression that it should stop almost immediately

The way I've checked if a fan is good in the past is roll up a newpaper or magazine and touch it to the outer blades once the engine is warmed up. If the fan stops, your clutch is probably bad, if it knocks the newspaper out of the way it's probably good. Also, did you confirm that your AC fan is good? Mine was spinning, but it was just from the radiator fans pulling air through and moving the blades on the AC fan. The actual motor never kicked on so I replaced the whole unit. Did you make sure your coolant is topped off and bleed the system with the bleed valve?

Thanks for the tip, i'll try it tonight. AC fan works for sure i can hear it turn on and you can feel it pulling air. Coolant is topped off, i doubt it has any bubbles when i opened bleeder screw and squeezed radiator hose, coolant instantly came out - cold engine
