General reliability question

My wife really wants a land rover defender? Coming from toyota land cruisers, is there a land rover defender model and year that is extremely reliable (not needing much every 150-200,000 miles). We have 2 friends that sold there's after many engine and electrical issues, hence the question.

Also, how reliable are the newer land rover diesel 110's that some are importing?

Just looking for something that she likes that needs little maintenance.

Thanks for any help.

If you're looking for Land Cruiser reliability in a Land Rover anything, then you will be disappointed. Countless Land Rovers go to 150-200,000+ miles but it takes work, commitment and dollars to get there. However, those who drive Land Rovers consistently over years will tell you it is worth it. I've driven a few Land Cruisers and there is so much more character, personality and performance, if not ultimate reliability in Land Rover. This is just my opinion and experience having owned several. I currently drive a 25 year old Range Rover as my sole transportation and have done the same with other Land Rovers. With maintenance up to standard I have no problem driving anywhere under any conditions with it.

Coming from toyota land cruisers

I'll just stop you right there. If that is on par, then you are about to enter a world of expensive misery.

Also search. To get an old enough one that is legit to import, you are stuck with either a ridiculously slow normally aspirated diesel, or a turbo diesel that is known for being a POS.

Its going to be crappy unless you are ready to drop serious money.

Ha. If you think a Land Rover is unreliable try a G wagen.

Old Land Rovers are just as reliable as anything else that is 25+ years old. All the best Toyota models are now approaching that age if they haven't rusted away by now.

I once had an argument with a fella that claimed the Toyota was far superior because not only did they never go wrong but you could also find repair parts for them all over the world. Really I said, but why do you think you can get repair parts all over the world if they never go wrong??

Gwagon's are reliable. The fancy ones sold in the us may not be but the sparse ones sold overseas are. Land rovers rust away as well, just not the body :) but what good os the body when the chassis is gone? Toyota has parts support all over the world. That's why it's easy to get part for them any where. They are only second to Mercedes when it comes to parts support. My dream garage would have an fj60, older g and a series iia.

Enough said. Thanks for the honesty. Maybe I should check out the G wagen and put a land rover badge on it and tell her it is a very rare model. Thanks again.

You are the glutton for punishment. hahahaaa.

I've daily driven rovers for several years across 250k miles.
3 tows.

Be proactive with the truck, and you will enjoy the ownership of the rover. be reactive with it, and you'll be putting it on craigslist in a few weeks or burning it to the ground.

Since you like Land Cruisers and want something seldom seen, import a nice clean 70 series cruiser, if you can find a 25 year old one that hasn't been beaten on.

Howdy from Sweden

Give this text to Your wife, less money:) http://expeditionportal.com/why-the-jeep-wrangler-is-the-new-land-rover-defender/

My thought when I bought a 4x4:)

The only cool looking 4x4 is Landrover Defender, Jeep Wrangler unlimited and G-Wagen. G-Wagen is to expensive.

I do think Defender looks best, but here in Sweden they are slightly more expensive. This would be my only vehicle but not my dayly driver. My girlfriend when we tried Defender after we tried a Wrangler was, no way:)

The Defender is so much more basic inside and have for me anyway strange driving position, and I dont like stick or diesel. Defender lacks airbags. I have read that the rear seat have smaller space for passengers but have much bigger rear than the Wrangler. The Defender is also much higher, would probably not fit my garage. The Defender is more sturdy built than a wrangler, and have a about 2 times the payload.

If Your girlfriend likes the Defender I think She will also like the Wrangler, they have rather similar look, more similar than others anyway. Anyway i bought a 2 door 2012 Wrangler to small, then a 2013 Unlimited rubicon. No problem with none of them, I love them, so nice.

How reliable any older vehicle is , greatly depends on previous owners . I have had landrovers for over 40 years , in that time I have been towed once , and that was because i was abusing the vehicle , operating it at more than 150% of its train weight ! .
Read the maintenance schedule for a Land cruiser, and you will see that it requires as much or if not more scheduled servicing than a defender. If you are buying an older vehicle , you need to give it a thorough going over , and correctly maintain it . You will then have a reliable vehicle. Its very much a case of what you put in will decide what you get out . Depending on year model comparison will be trading one item plus on one for another . Unfortunately , you are very limited on choice due to where you live , and restrictive laws there.

Much as I love the Defenders, when I did my research last year I found the cost to ability ratio okay but the upkeep not worth it for me. I ended up with a new Nissan Xterra which I fitted with proper skids and bumpers. It is a very capable off road vehicle, very close to the Wrangler. Where it shines is on the highway. I can cruise all day without fatigue and then wheel off road simply by shifting in to 4 wheel drive. The only other substantive upgrade I am considering is the OME suspension, 2 inch lift with better on and off road performance than stock. The only draw back is that it is a North American vehicle, so service outside the US or Canada may be sketchy.

The Canadian military use the "bare bones" GWagens and hate them. Overly complicated in a way only the Germans can manage and underpowered.

My point about Toyota service and repair parts being available anywhere was to highlight the fact that they do go wrong often and require such parts.

Or are there just loads of really stupid auto parts store owners the world over stocking Toyota parts they will never sell because no one will ever need them?

I've worked on all makes and models for a living and found everything has its shortcomings.

Hell, car for car an old full sized Blazer is more reliable than a Toyota. It's just Toyota owners in general are more anal about servicing because they want reliability above all else. If the average old Land Rover got as much effort spent on maintenance as FJ40's then everyone would think they are super reliable as well.
