I have a house in Truckee (Prosser Estate), rented to a single mother with 3 kids. We lost power for almost 3 days straight. After the second night, I borrowed a Honda generator from a Burning Man friend who has a bunch for his camp. We needed it to run the furnace so she could at least have heat, and my water pipes would not freeze.
We are ordering a new one now and have it shipped to my house in Reno. I want to save the world but I also need my tenant to pay her rent.
Life is complicated.

Only the idiots that half read new laws and jump to incorrect assumptions, or worse just regurgitating what other idiots say. ?♂️Rv idiots, that's a term I've never heard. Is that reserved
Just for Californians?
In San Diego the head of SANDAG is driven around in a petrol car with a driver. He wants to spend $150 billion in 30 years for public transportation. How about filling potholes, fixing sidewalks repaving surface streets, redoing crosswalks first and widening the freeways for traffic first.I'm sure there is an unwritten rule that these same politicians will have access to gasoline powered generators for their second and third homes in times of need.
Much like my nanny state of Mass, it's really the voter's fault. Always follow the money....
The most generous assessment would be that person is too concerned with a ‘legacy’ project. The truth is probably more likely ‘the bigger the project, the bigger the grift’.In San Diego the head of SANDAG is driven around in a petrol car with a driver. As a CA resident with a 3500watt generator and a 8.2kwatt hr solar system… No.. The battery in a box isn’t really an ideal solution. So first off in 2017 really the first time in modern CA wild fire history the Santa Rosa fire which I evacuated family from, resulted in 7 days of basically zero solar generation at my home 100 miles away. At one point due to high winds we went 3 days no power during that period. As a result I invested about $2100 into a transfer switch and the 3500watt Predator generator which powers about 98% of my home’s 120v stuff. Fantastic setup!!With all the Lithium Tech on the market nower days and with the amount of Sun California gets I would of thought that Lithium/Solar Generators would of been the best way to go, Every week someone brings out a new model and the prices are falling,
I just bought Two large ones this weekend.
No solar system is going to compete with bushfires near by, even one as big as yours, Your system is powering a House, My system is also powering a house the only differance is I have switched all my Appliances to either 12v or AC Low watt units, Where 8.2 Kwh yours produces in an hour would last me 3 or 4 days if I was being wreckless with the power,As a CA resident with a 3500watt generator and a 8.2kwatt hr solar system… No.. I have about 90 hours of run time on it now. Per hour cost!! Think about it. Battery cost for my home vs hours of use make it a bigger waste of money than a cheap travel trailer at exaggerated covid prices?
Having said that!! My 8.2kwatt hr solar system is a enphase micro inverter system. The new IQ-8 Enphase micro inverter can switch to direct house power without a battery!! So for instance this last yr when our power was off due to high winds and fire risk we had clear skies. I would not need to run my generator till solar generation dropped off due to sun angle or sky obscured etc. My hope is that I’ll be able to upgrade my inverters next yr. As Enphase often runs retro fit upgrade deals to pre existing customers. For instance the IQ-7 this yr was a roughly $65 per panel retro fit upgrade offer to pre existing customers.
The dirty generator issue will be addressed by going to EFI for cleaner running generators. Not really a big deal.

With my fridges I can go away camping for a week using just a 512Wh SoGen and never have to worry about power, But apart from the SoGens I also have 3x 115Ah batteries I could load in the Vehicle, I bought those first and then I bought a 2.0Kw Gas Generator and in 2 and a bit years I have never used it, I started it when I got it and I drained it out and put it back in the Box,
All of my so called SoGens will fast charge from a Vehicle or Solar or wall outlet or Gas powered Generator,
I alway have a backup plan for the backup plan for the backup plan
Solar Generators are not the be all and end all, Like they would be useless at the North and South Poles at Winter time because there is no Sun, But on the other hand I could run them Down and Charge them all at once in 4 to 5 hours and they would last another couple of weeks as with the 3x 115Ah Batteries,
When you look at your Solar system it is Awesome and must produce well over 230Kw in a week or So. Times that by 52 weeks thats nearly 12 million watts a year, I use well under 1100kw per year.
I agree, With the Generator what size Plug In Charger do you use to Charge the Battery Bank, ? Reason I ask is because I was trying to find a workshop type charger with a Guaranteed UP TO 100A out put, I bought a 35Ah Charger a long while ago and the best I have seen it put out is about 26/27A, Sure it will put out over 300 on the Boost Start function but thats no good for charging Ay.This is reference to generator vs battery alternatives for real power needs for a family not survival minimalist needs. People don’t need a generator for minimalist needs.
A big reason we moved from ice blocks in coolers to a generator was due to COVID, keeping food, home office, home schooling due to COVID closures.
The real surprise we didn’t anticipate and probably one of our top reasons now to have the generator is our air purifiers. With them we easily keep the house livable during heavy smoke laden days where AQI numbers are through the roof and power has been cut. By having that ability we can comfortably stay home vs try and find a place to go where we can escape the garbage air quality.
I do hope to pickup a Escape travel trailer ironically to be used as our escape pod if needed. But also for some future trips which I hope we can plan for sooner than later. But a air purifier we can toss in the trailer will be on the evacuation escape pod list lol.
