GENII Radio Antenna Question

My stereo antenna is physically broken. It looks like it was broken off at some point. I'm looking to fix this. But as usual I have some questions. Looking at the manual, it indicates that if it is the motor, then I gotta get the fender off or the passenger footwell area in order to get to the motor. But if it is the pole/antenna, then there is a way of removing it from the top and basically pulling out the pole and replacing it with a new one. The problem is that the motor needs to be working. In my case, when turing the stereo on or off, I don't hear a motor. I'm assuming I should hear it trying. Before I get far into this, is there a fuse for the motor? The manual doesn't seem to indicate there is one. The only thing it says is to check the connector for the motor behind the stereo and run some voltage tests.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Although I don't have a Gen. II, I did just replace the antenna mast recently.

Since you don't hear the motor running every time you turn on and off your rig, I would follow the FSM and first check to see if power is getting to the motor. If it's getting power and not working, the motor is quite expensive to replace.

To get to the motor in my Gen III you just remove the wheel well plastic liner to access the motor. Once in there, it's a matter of a couple of bolts to remove the motor. The power mast has a toothed plastic strand that feeds into the gears in the motor unit. To get the mast to feed in, turn the ignition to the on position. Next, offer the end of the plastic strand up to the gear set in the motor and have someone turn off the ignition; this will pull in the plastic strand and lower the mast. It's a very easy repair and the part was under twenty dollars.

While working on the repair I decided I wanted to have control over the antenna position even with the stereo on...
So I pulled the stereo out and spliced into the power that feeds the antenna motor. Installed a switch in the dash board and ran the power through the switch. Now when the stereo is on playing music through a CD or IPOD, the antenna can be in the down position (and not getting ripped of by tree branches and brush on overgrown trails). Works a treat.

There's noting to add to Inyo_man reply, except if the motor is bad find one at your local Pick n Pull. Look for 95 - 00.

I did away with my power one and went to a mast only.

My 95 did not have a motor inside the fenderwell, only a mount to the fender and a broken antenna stub.

Was it originally a power antenna or do you have a fixed antenna mount w/ a broken antenna? If it's fixed, you can simply get an antenna mast from your local pick and pull. If it needs the motor as well, then yes, another pick and pull item. Good thing is the removal will be good practice for when you have to do the same for your own rig. :)

Like I said, there was no motor inside the fenderwell and the antenna that was there was broken. The fenders are currently not installed on the rig. The wiring going to the antenna looked factory. I cut it, we never use the radio anyways. I may try filling the hole and paint over it, or install a 2M radio antenna there.
