Getting out of the closet...

I think that it's time to show the world what I am planning to do: a combination of Canter/Fuso and Land Cruiser and lots of custom stuff.

Here is the link to my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Exmotech/388754124554155

and the link to the newly created website: camper 4x4

Not sure if I posted in the right place because I don't know if it's a Lanc Cruiser with Canter parts or the other way round. Anyway enjoy and feel free to comment. I am at the very beginning of my conversion but I hope things will speed up soon.

Cool! Good luck on your project.

I personally would not have chosen a Series 80 petrol drivetrain, due to issues with head gasket failure and increasing difficulties in obtaining certain (and expensive) parts, plus the horrible fuel economy..... but if yours is in prime shape you should be fine. It will certainly be easier to service with the tilt cab!

You can always add a supercharger as funds allow...... I suggest that you plan for that by making your cooling system much bigger than actually needed. The stock 80 radiator will not be sufficient if you add forced induction, with that heavy a load.

Can you elaborate a little more on why you didn't choose a diesel Land Cruiser or other brand of engine? Was it just a matter of available funds?

Funds and knowledge were my main criteria.

1. The 1fz-fe is a very sturdy engine and the headgasket problems were caused not by the engine design but because of a faulty headgasket, which was later replaced with a re-engineered model. So any 80 series which had the headgasket replaced is a safe bet. There are no reports that i know of of a 'new' HG which failed.

2. Can you elaborate on the expensive parts which are hard to get? Currently I don't see that parts for a cummins, 1hz or other are much cheaper.

3. The car will run on LPG so this will keep costs rather reasonable.

4. I am not planning a supercharger. The same amount of money will let me swap a corvette 5.7 or 6.0 so no need to supercharge.

5. Limited funds make me stick to the petrol engine. A 1fz-fe costs around $700 and a 1hz is probably $3500.

6. I already have another FZJ80 so i know this model rather well.
