In a bit... getting body / paint work done. Also need to finish subframe lift.
I ruined the stock gas tank. It's dented badly, lost 4 gallons capacity. So ordered a new tank with fuel pump and fuel sender from the dealer. Aso the auxiliary tank should arrive this month. Doing a custom rear bumper. Will be building out the camper after completing the exterior. Lots to do before trips this summer!
Just ran the first non-off road tank of gas since installing the 35s. It mostly consisted of hauling the mountain bike to various trails (mixed driving). Just over 17mpg. Right about what it got with stock gears and skinny 33.5" tires. Works for me.
good progress for sure, and thanks for head's up on exchange rate sale! What skids are you running? I looked back through thread but was having a tough time finding it.
Bushskinz - www.offroad4wd.com.au - Guys on the Pajero forums seemed to be most happy with these skids. I love the front 2 skids. The back ones would be extremely simple to fabricate and they are heavy (expensive to ship). I'd buy the front 2 and have the rest fabricated locally. Also, if you use the truck on trails install a gas tank skid. I've damaged my tank to the point where it will run out of gas after 18 gallons. Very difficult to find a used good condition tank (I had 2 shipped in and both were damaged). New OEM tanks are expensive (even with wholesale pricing).
Heyy Montypower! How u liking Cali? Also I have a question about gears, I know the 01 xls has 4.9 to my 06 Limited 4.3.. Do I really need to swap out mine? I'm putting in arb lockers in some time and since I'm down there.. should I start looking for xls gears?
Working and Mt Biking in Cali was fun. Back in Portland now. Yes, it would be recommended to install gears with arb. No additional setup cost. Plus, makes it fast to swap in with no downtime...
Yeah I know it's practical to do so since I'm down there but, is it necessary? I don't really plan to get bigger tires or who knows maybe I will. How has the change of gearing effected ur Monty?
If you are running 33" + tires it is nice. 32" or smaller would be too low. Speedo is dead on with 35s and 4.90s. I'm going down to 34s to avoid dealing with subframe drop. Lots of trips coming up! Will be out on trips every week for the next couple months.
Here's the new tires/wheels.
Wheels are from FNwheels.com 17x8" Type X
Tires are the new BFG Ko2 34x10.5r17
So far, I'm very happy with them. They are really the perfect type/size tire for this truck. The tread width is ~9". Mounted height is just over 33". Quiet on road. Excellent lateral traction (especially on gravel roads). Worked well enough in the mud (expedition style). Has snowflake rating (no chains required). Light weight @ 55lbs (load D). 3 ply sidewall. Fuel mileage increased ~ 20mpg on road.
Downside: Expensive as with most 17" tires.
Driven about 1,400 miles since installing last week. Lots of highway, gravel, mud and sand. Ideal expedition style tire.
