OK4WD is a great shop. Highly recommended. I think the Backbone install yourself is doable. If you haven't seen it yet, here is the quick video I shot of the very firs Backbone install to take place in the USA. Might give you and idea of what you are in for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSoeXJbYz6s

I can tell you from using this system hard for the last 2 seasons now is that it's bullet proof. Performs way better than those noisy cage-type systems. I am at 34,000 miles and counting with the product. It's still like new.

OK here's the actual weight rating specification direct from Rhino Rack Engineers,

"the Backbone System on a Jeep JK with our Pioneer Tray will take on OVER 500 pounds of static weight. When on the trail driving the system can handle and is rated at 289 pounds.

RRUSA"

This rating will easily handle any RTT on the market including a large awning and additional accessories no problem.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Appreciate the follow up on the weight rating! Sounds like a great system and I'm going to look into it shortly.

Cheers!

Thing is, for larger items like Kayaks, once the top is off you can simply use the vehicles Roll Bar to mount to.

Bottom line is you really should keep your roof rack payload under 300lbs on highway for safety sakes with the vehicles CG. On Highway at speed in an accident avoidance maneuver could get land you rolled over on pavement easily.

Let me know if you have any questions.

IF it were me I would not use a RTT with the Rhino System. Its using the hard top for support. Great for gear, and lighter large items like sleeping bags, clothing, and normal tents. But a RTT is a heavy piece to put on top of the roof.

I personally have a gobi and I cannot say enough good about the rack or their customer service. When I originally purchased the rack it got some damage during shipping. They drove up from Denver to meet me in Keystone while I was on a snowboarding trip and replaced the part in the parking lot. They also gave me some touch up paint that matched the powder coating. That far exceeded any of my expectations.

From real world experience and being able to watch hundreds of JK's being built in every direction imaginable, I personally have a huge favoring to products that stand the test of time. The north east salty winters and beaches put a hurting on products and vehicles alike. Because of this I chose the AEV roof rack system, which features a Rhino Rack platform. The only reason i went with the AEV over the RR was I liked not being able to see the feet and I do not remove my hardtop.

While I like the design and craftsmanship in GOBI racks, the steel construction just is in an unfair fight with the elements in terms of rust and wind resistance in my area.

Just my .02c :)

Even better. So you drill holes, and the rack mounts thorugh the roof and to the roll bars.

Yes, Living in newfoundland has me choosing products the same way. Like, I am not replacing my bumpers but modifying mine to the way I want them. The plastic does not take hits, but it does not rust and look like crap after a year in the winter here. I would always be removing my bumpers every year and powder coating them all the time. Instead, I am using VDP high clearance corners, an Olympic 4x4 winch mount and my MBRP light bar and be done with the bumpers. I Like the rhino rack for my rack as I can still remove the top when I want.
