goin' to california, with an aching in my heart, need advice

It changed drastically in the 5-6 years I was there. The hwy is now paved from the border all the way to Cabo. It's still a great place to explore and still wild if you're willing to venture out a bit. My last road trip was nearly 100% off road from la Paz to the Az border. I spent about 100 miles altogether on the hwy and that was only when Id come back up for fuel.

If you head deep into Baja stop at Cocos corner and get directions to the mission ruins about 30 miles south of there. It runs thru some amazing canyons and arroyos.

And find a Baja Almanac. It's an amazing set of maps. They are rare but I've heard you can order them from Allende books in la Paz. The shop is owned by gringos so there shouldn't be a language barrier of you call (assuming you don't Habla). Just know that their definition of an unimproved road means "goat trail".

Three more tips. 1. I use 18" lag bolts and my impact driver to stake my tent when it gets windy. Makes penetrating the rocky soil a breeze. 2. Bring a bottle of good tequila and a few cups. Many of the roads cross private land. Be sure to shut the gate behind you when you cross. And if you see cabelleros on horseback, wave and offer them a drink. 3. Bring extra bottles of water and cheap sunglasses from the dollar store. Generosity goes along way at the military checkpoints and the soldiers appreciate it. I'd get searched heading south and then driving back up a week or two later they'd recognize me and save me thru.[/QUote

grab my hat,
IM going with you!!!

I'm considering a trip next fall to la paz. i plan to spend a few days sailing and spearfishing with friends and then staying off road all the way back to the border. if it happens i'll post here. we have three monteros from nor cal interested and maybe a couple from az. a full on convoy would be pretty damned cool.

After the Sierra Challenge?

Depends on when in September the Sierra Challenge falls. Im hoping for early October in Baja but it depends on hurricane season. Every time I attempt to meet up with Az Crew for a trip something happens - either I get stuck working, or I blow something in the rear end (happened twice now). Maybe if I plan another trip as well, I'll get lucky and make one or both.

Dog: a vintage australian shepard. this may be his last rodeo. it may be both our last rodeo if i dont carefully plan this.

I would bring along any documentation you can for your dog, specifically vaccination records. I've been asked to provide proof of ownership when going into Mexico, and proof of vaccination when returning to the US. There have been stories of drugs being smuggled into the US via dog's stomachs and at one point the border checkpoints were pretty strict about verifying people's pets.

Good luck tomorrow with the weather! Hope you're out in front of it - Have fun and drive safely!

no! ill be flyin' right into the teeth of it!
12" at govt camp, and falling hard.
leaving pdx roughly noon-ish or sooner if possible. if i can dirt bag at smith rocks tomorrow night i will consider that good progress. set up camp in the dark, in the falling snow most likely, oh well done it a hunnert times.
im more concerned about that stretch down through paisley and summer lake- into lakeview ice wind and white out conditions
slack the bit, give her some rein, tuck my chin and away we go!

thanks for your interest

The montee has delivered me to cali, has delivered me to all different kind of places, including a Buddhist monestery, and when the weather clears a bit we will turn once again northward to oregon . With a reluctance to leave.
This moment I'm near coyote canyon in the AB .
A thrill to see all of the really inspiring jeeps out here.hundreds of them.
I'm the only lonely montero.
I did see one cat from Washington in trooper about the vintage of my montee

I'm told there is a camp at the canyon but turned back as I fear it may be too much for the trailer to handle

I didn't read all the replies... travel into Mexico once a year for a month or so, NEVER once an issue. All checkpoints, policeman, stops at markets in little towns - no issues. Van camp in wilderness, beaches, and camp/RV parks, nothing but accommodating locals - still Facebook buddies with many. Travel with 2 dogs, no problems, just get your vet to fill out health form - though never once been asked & walk dogs everywhere down there. Tijuana? Safer than LA. Smaller beach or desert towns? Best experience ever. I don't travel there with guns and I don't travel after dark. Check out the wine region south of Tijuana and north of Ensenada, nicer and safer than your home town.

395 was a mess all the way to bishop ca.
Ice snow .
Nearly solid white from Lakeview to north of reno.
Which brings up a point seldom discussed here.
The montee is a king off road
But it's important to mention how amazingly well balance and predictable the rig has been designed to be on hardback slippery surfaces.
I gained huge confidence and respect in driving her.
Mine is factory stock, unmodified, in any way.

For sure when I return to shop this rig is getting a complete front suspension swap into 2 gen.
With emu bars and my konis.
She deserves it and needs it.
During one of her fainting spells outside of reno in a snow storm, I had a chat with her.
I put it in these terms:
Honey if you get me down and back I will lavish you with new parts and life eternal.
If u fail me I will personally cut u up into hundreds of pieces and feed u to the crusher.

Hahahahhaa. I've had many conversations with tools/vehicles/firearms that sounded like this. Thank you for making me laugh out loud (thus making me look...special... in front of my wife and in laws).

OK so lesson time.
or better said here is what happened to me or better yet "do as i say and not as i do"

update; i leave Portland oregon in a blizzardon december 17th or so. headed for california in an untested montero of ancient vintage that i had found derelict on the side of the road one day, and had carefully renovated into a runner.
purple with faded hood and a leaky sunroof she is. but i grew to love her like an ugly woman who is useful.
built a small 63"x 40" trailer. loaded the rig and trailer with way too much stuff; first of my own rules that i broke. but not the last.
a spare tire for the trailer that was flat, a new spare for the back door.
4 tool boxes, two 5 gallon cans for gas. two tents sleeping gear, a cooler big enough to sleep in, and some fancy new roof racks i had made from new quick and easy clamps and some oak 1x4's for that vintage look, but were empty . a shovel, a hilift a pulaski and by god im ready for anything.
5 pounds of smoked beef and pork. a jug of water, and this hill billy was off! Dog clumb into the back and allowed as he was not going to be left behind, so what the hell.
blasting through portland's first snow of the season.
she is running along fine except for that miss at about 2100 rpm; TPS says I, no ever to mind , wont give me any problems.
up and over mt hood, snowing like santa's sunday.
through Bend , down lonely 31, and well into dark i gets to Lakeview, still snowing, white road all the way.
quickly gaining respect for my montee. sure footed, balanced (unlike her driver) and nimble.
the wal mart wranglers are perfect ; light, grippy, a little noisy, and not harsh riding at all.
wish i had time to put new shocks on b4 i left.

Out of lakeview in the a.m. going for reno. snowing.still snowing.
down hill into reno; red rock road. my saddle mount stumbles and quits. dies under me.
into the maverick station. a long ponder. and ponder some more. its getting late and im trying to make bishop. thats a rough stretch of road over mammoth, on a cranky montee in the coming dark and her having fainting spells.
could be trouble.

she wakes up and i goose her we are gone from that place.
carson, bridgeport.cold as hell, no clouds, cold.
i am relentless, if she faints im giving her good reason to do so.
almost a perversity i run her into the dark, and well beyond,
Dog is licking his privates and wondering whens dinner. i'm walleyed peering through the flat windscreen.
hit Bishop . motel. cold.

south of bishop the land opens up, big country, next day warm lolligag, fart around, fix a leaky oil cooler line get to escondido bout 830 p.m.

Next: Break all the rules get caught. Anza borrego where the land truly is harsh.
