Google Nexus 7 tablet

I've got my 32 gig Nexus, sweet little unit. Too bad my Verizon contract isn't expired or I would consider getting the 3G model instead.

I picked my 32gb version up the other day. My only complaint at the moment is that all the Amazon movies and video's that we've purchased in the past will not download and play on the Nexus 7 because it will not run Adobe Flash. Hopefully that will change in the future.

Has anyone seen a car dock that uses the 4 contacts (left lower edge of tablet) for charging? It would be nice to not have to plug in every time it gets docked.

I'm also shopping for a good low profile case/cover.

Pro clips seem to have one of the few powered doc's for the Nexus 7. You can get it unpowered, hard wired, or with a cig plug. Snap it in the cradle and slide it sideways to engage the USB port for charging. This one will probably not work with any covers/sleeves. http://blog.proclipusa.com/new-tablet-holders-now-available-for-google-nexus-7/

Ram mounts have 3 versions for the Nexus 7 as well. Locking, non-locking, and the finger style. They come with different config's for use with covers but don't have any charging capabilities.

I am. sick of the Garmin, I was sitting on a side street and put "Shell" in the search for finding a fuel station, Garmin (its updated...) said nearest one was 18km's away. I pulled out my google android (before I had the Nexus) and there was one 2 blocks from me. Since I've gotten the tablet, my garmin has become obsolete.

I'm seriously considering a Nexus 7 for navigation as well. I'm looking at the price of a new GPS unit and it kinda sucks. The only one I'm considering is the Garmin Montana, which is A LOT more than a Nexus. Also a Nexus would integrate better with everything else I have.

Checked out the Nexus 7 today. First impressions are positive; really appreciated the GUI layout elements with respect to font choices, line weights and spacings, and the general lack of skeuomorphism. Fresh. This is the first time I've really played with Android so take that with a grain of salt.

The size is good, about 0.5" narrower than the iPad Mini and about 1.25" shorter. A lot smaller than a regular iPad. I couldn't differentiate an appreciable difference in thickness although I suspect the iPad Mini is thinner. It's a non-issue.

The quality of build (i.e. the case) is not as high as the iPad Mini but in the absence of an iPad Mini to compare against it would be considered top notch for consumer grade computer equipment.

The display was excellent and the pixel density is very good. By the numbers it is better than the iPad Mini IIRC (sorry, this is my bone to pick with the Mini - at the current ask price it should have been Retina, or more memory, or something).

The only thing that caught me off was the interactivity of the touch screen. It's "different". I couldn't place my finger on the difference but it seemed laggy or latent compared to my iPad 2. I suspect this is due to me being so used to the iPad. We'll see how it goes when my N7 arrives in the mail.

Same here, telling me a gas station is sixteen miles away when I'm looking right at one. I feel like I paid for a update ('13) with no changes. Imagine if Google bought out Garmin. Round file those crappy/restrictive Garmin maps. What a wonderful world it would be.

The Nexus 7 (32 GB, HPSA+) arrived yesterday and I've been playing with it over the last 24 hours or so.

No regrets on the purchase. The machine works fine, is pretty peppy, looks good and is great value.

Compared to the iPad 2 I have it is slightly heavier, maybe a touch thicker. Obviously it is smaller. I prefer the screen on the Nexus due to the pixel density even though it is smaller.

This is my first Android device so I'm still getting used to the interface. From a design and style point of view it is great. I find there are a few places that I may be doing an operation or two to get to the same place compared to iOS but that may be me being unfamiliar with the OS.

I like Chrome, I haven't run it on my Macs and *nix workstations for a few years so it is kind of fresh to me. It seems to have snappier rendering than Safari on the iPad. That could be down to the device processor more so than the software though. I miss not having a bookmarks bar across the top of the browser and getting to the bookmarks seems cumbersome. Again, could be an OS unfamiliarity thing.

The battery doesn't seem to last quite as long but that is likely due to the multitasking on Nexus. In some ways I appreciate my backgrounded messaging apps indicating new messages but in some ways I resent the "interruption". ha. It lasts a long time. I didn't time it but it lasted all day... just seemed less percentage at the end versus the iPad 2.

There has only been two things that made me wonder... When I first got the machine there were a couple of glitches where the screen would not redraw properly between rotate and zoom... pixelated fonts and sort of "stuck". Only lasted less than a second but hasn't recurred since installing the OS update to 4.2 (from 4.1).

Also, I had to do a factory reset in order to get it to recognize my SIM card after the initial setup. Not a big deal. Again, could be down to an old OS thing.

I'd recommend this device to anyone. I had stayed away from Android devices up to this point because they seemed kinda crude compared to the Apple devices. Not any more. I'm actually starting to prefer Android to iOS just for the look-n-feel aspect (I loathe skeuomorphism).

Click on your "APPS" button (center, bottom of the screen), then, at the top, you'll see "apps" and "widgets" On the first page, click "widgets" push and hold "Bookmarks" and plop it on your desktop, voilà, instant, 1 click to your bookmarks (any of them) or, just "Bookmark" for one single bookmark (expo portal for instance)

Also, when in a webpage, if you wish, click on the menu button in chrome (3 dots, top right) and click "Request desktop site" if you want the full experience (I don't often like the mobile views)

Any update on this thread? Has anyone used the N7 out past cell reception? I was wondering if the internal GPS chip was good enough or is a bluetooth GPS receiver needed?

The GPS has worked great for me and it's much better than my droid 3. It will place me in my living room at home through 2 stories. :) I think your biggest limitation will be what maps you run. I have played with Google maps offline but not extensively. Google tracks is pretty cool too. To do navigation directions you have to be teathered tho. I have a ram mount system spec'd in for my truck but haven't gotten around to order it yet.
