Got a ?

My girlfriend and I will be welcoming our Daughter into the world within the next month . I grew up in a family that did alot of camping all over the states . Mom and Dad started with a pop up and went all the way thru to a motor home by the time I was in high school. So when I got out of school one of the presents I got was a small 3 man dome tent (I still have this tent ) .For the last ten years I have been camping out of my tents in various campgrounds in the state of Alabama . My girlfriend has never been camping for more than one night all thought she really is interested in going .I have been looking at pop ups for many years but have never bit the bullet . I have found lots of info on here and would like to know your opinion on tent camping with small Children . I have all of my equipment for cooking and have moved to a larger 2 room tent , I would like to get off the beaten path a little and that is where the pop up would be a hang up . Open to ideas . Thanks in advance Bama

I started my twins tent camping at 6 months old. They are 3 now, and love to camp. We use a 2 room tent also, when they were smalerl it allowed a play and child care area and we all slept on one side. Now we put the kids in one half and my wife and I use the other half. It still gives them room to play, but allows us to keep our stuff separated out from the kids so they won't get into anything and since they have grown they need more sleeping space.

i've never been to alabama, but i would assume that ti gets very hot in the summer time. it may be an issue keeping the baby comfotable. a pop up with a small a/c unit on top may not be the type of camping your looking to get into, but it may end up being better for the baby. either way, atleast your camping with your family.

Took my oldest camping at 7 months in low 30* weather, the younger at 3 months during the summer in the NC mountains. Always in some sort of tent, usually double the rated size to keep gear dry, playspace for kids in yucky weather, etc. Be smart, be safe, be prepared and they go where you go. Popup could be a base camp for day hikes. If you like really off, off the beaten path you could look at either the 4x4 trailer/rtt combo or the aussie style trailer/tent combo. Sounds like comfort for the other half is a big factor, so maybe the latter. Start with the pop up and get more adventurous if the family is as interested as you? Good luck, and above all have fun!

I agree with Dev/M416. Be prepared and cater to your comfort level for now. I think the main thing is to make sure that mom is also happy and try to camp in cooler areas in the summer. If you are in N AL there is a RV show that will be in Huntsville this weekend I believe. That is if you wanted to look at different options for trailers. However I have enjoyed the simplicity of the my modified M416 with a RTT.

Well we got a surprise . My Brother called on a Friday mourning saying that we needed to come to the Hospital because his wife was going into labor . My neice was born on 1-20-2012. That sunday my Girlfriend was complaining of some pains in her side and after talking to the doctor headed to the hospital just to make sure everything was ok. Well our Daughter was born on 1-24-2012 .We are still in the Hospital due to some other circumstances . I was slowly getting stuff togather for camping in the fall but some of that will have to be put on hold for now.

Congrats! You can totally do a tent with an air mattress and your G/F will be more than happy. My wife and I have been camping for a while together and now we have 19 mo old who has been camping since 4 months old! We have a little pea pod mini tent that we put inside our tent with us and he loves it, plus it keeps blankets from falling on him during the night. I say get a 6-8 person tent so you have some extra room for all the baby and wife needs. I have a 4 person and I think it is a tad too small. Food for thought! Congrats!

My my youngest was born July 15, 2007 and went camping August 1-7 in a tent. My daughter wasn't quite 2 yet and she had her own sleeping bag and pad. Temps were mid 60's at night to mid 90's midday and had no issues. Swaddled properly at night kept him cozy and the boob buffet made meals easy. A bug net was mandatory to keep the skeeters away along with constant shade.

No bug spray or sunscreen for kids under 6 months old.

Now they are 4 & 6 and had 38 days of camping in 2011 and hopefully as much in 2012.

Pic with 2 week old Cameron and Grandpa and daytime shade and bug screen.
