GPS tracking

I'm about to pickup a CDN M101 to eventually build for the trail. Currently I don't live in the most secure of locations, so I was wondering if anybody has tips about trailer security. I thought something like the AccuTracking software would be somewhat useful if the trailer is stolen. It costs about $17 per month.

What I was planning was install a ammo can on the front of the trailer with a small solar panel and battery to connect the phone charger to. This obviously isn't the most secure method, but would provide some GPS tracking if the chain-the-trailer-to-the-light-pole doesn't succeed. Does anyone have ideas about this?

There is no theft proof - except the car that blows up in the Bond movie, there is only theft resistant. IMO, that translates into making it a supreme pita to steal and/or a risky to steal.

If your CDN M101 still has the lunnette try a pair of round 1/4" steel plates, one top and one bottom, slightly larger in diameter than the outside diameter of the lunnette. The top one with a 1/4" steel bar welded perpendicular in the center facing down, the bottom with a slot cut into it to allow the bar to project through. Cut a hole in the bar to fit a good Master Lock, don't allow too much slop between the bottom plate and the lunnette. The lock on the bottom with be protected a bit from weather and its location on the bottom makes cutting it more of a pita. If you think more is required, help protect the lock from cutters or a torch with a circle of steel - ie. a piece of 4" or 5" steel pipe maybe 3" or 4" long welded to the bottom plate.

If your M101 has a ball coupler, there are good coupler locks available off the shelf that prevent the trailer coupler from being set on over a ball.

Cain the trailer too. Also, if the wheels have spokes, use chain through the spoke and around the axle too, so even when the chain and lunnetter lock are defeated the trailer won't roll without more work from the crooks.

Motion detecting alarm, maybe lights?

Hope this helps,

AccuTracking requires that the phone has a clear view of the sky - GPS signal doesn't penetrate well through ammo cans. That would mean the phone would be exposed to thieves and the weather. There are other solutions out there that are waterproof, but the cost and power consumption is higher.

My recommendation is a combination of chains, locks, wheel removal and good insurance :)

I have one of these http://www.easternmarine.com/BLAYLOCK-Pintle-Ring/Lunette-Trailer-Coupler-Lock-TL-60/ and it works great. There is no 100% method of security, but with this in place, I have no fear leaving the trailer parked outside or out in the woods. There are also many styles for ball hitches as well. The chaines in the spokes will also make it very unappealing for someone to try and take.

I love you man!!!

I have looked and looked and looked for something like this for our company's lunette equipped trailers and for my three lunette equipped trailers as well. Never found a good alternative to the home or shop made version I described in my earlier post.

The shop made versions we use work, but they rust as soon as the paint chips and aren't nearly as neat and clean as the one you linked too.

I have been thinking alot about getting a M101A1/A2 myself and, having thought alot about security for the trailer, I have to say that looks like an outstanding item to have.

The tounge of my trailer is 2 1/2" box tubbing. The head coupler is welded to another smaller size that slides inside the tounge. A pin or bolt goes all the way through the tounge keeping the insert from sliding out. When I park the trailer I slide out the head and take it with me. The tounge can't be hooked up to anything, except a lawn tractor, as it fits my John Deer with a pin inserted. Bad guys usually don't look for trailers to steal riding lawn tractors......just a thought. I could also change the type of coupler to what ever the tow vehicle has.

I've seen tire/wheel boots sort of what the parking people use to clamp around one of the wheels on the trailer...that looks pretty secure.
