Great Sandy Desert - Australia

Whilst I've been through parts of the Great Sandy Desert in Australia, and also many of the others (including the Simpson, Little Sandy Desert, Gibson Desert, Tanami Desert and Stony Desert), I haven't thought to take a video of any of it!
Most people think of deserts as being nothing but "sand", but here in Oz, our deserts are quite different and really are very pretty.
Here's a link from another forum that has a video on it that gives a great indication of what it's all like that I thought I'd include for all of the non-Aussies on the Expedition Portal! Just remember to bring your best tyre repair gear and a good sense of humour!

A place I intend to visit is Rudall River NP, between Newman and the Canning Stock Route. Beautiful water holes lined with palms....

I look forward to some travels down under! That camera looks pretty stable - gyroscopic?

Here was his post on the video equipment he was using:

I have the Sony HDR-XR200. It has a 120 Gig hard drive and 4 megapixel still camera. The anti-shock/shake system in it is absolutely fantastic. It also has a GPS feature that tags your video to a GPS location and you can then view on Google maps etc. This especially suited me because of the remote off track travelling I do. I have been very impressed with the unit. John & Suzette who travelled with me this year we also suitably impressed and bought the unit above this one on their return.

In the vehicle, I use a RAM mount clipped to the Jesus handle on the A Pillar. I did have it on the passenger’s side and operated it with the remote but found it was a damn site easier to control with it on the A pillar beside me. These bits and bobs from RAM you can get on the GPSOZ website about $60 for everything ( http://www.gpsoz.com.au/ram.htm ). "

Charlie,

Have a spent a lot of time kicking about Rudall over the past 5 years. A beaut place and incredible country. No palm trees unfortunately. The Livistonias are a little further north in the Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park).

This link is to the 30 or more blogs I've written on Rudall including our expedition there this year. I hope you get there. It is truly spectacular.

Thanks VERY much. I will have from late June thru mid Sept (pick up truck near Melbourne, drop off in Perth) so I think I will just have time for the Kimberly area and then Rudall River, without excessive driving (last trip I averaged 180km/day). But i shall print out your blog or else bookmark it for my satellite system.
I will likely have another 6-7 weeks from Mid Nov thru New Years, though northern WA will be very hot then.

The Kimberley (Western Australia) in November

Yes I'd hate to be up the top end in November. It'd be getting damn hot and very humid. We spent a couple of weeks exploring the Drysdale Escarpment in the Kimberley July just passed. We followed the Carson River east from the Kalumbaru Road. Some fantastic ancient Bradshaw galleries in the many rocky gullies of the escarpment. Mitchell Falls also had an amazing flow of water making it spectacular.

The La Nina effect we are currently experiencing here in Oz is not due to break down until mid 2011 which may mean a lot of cyclones down the west coast north of Kalbarri. This will hopefully lead to a lot of water in the remote areas like Rudall much as it was in 2006. Magnificent.
