Greetings guys... ... from a newbie here...

Hope you are all doing well, mostly just saying hi. I have been into Land Cruisers for a long time and some cruiserheads might know me from the ih8mud board and from pirate4x4 where I was for several years. Trying not too be too much of a web wheeler but am on every day because I build web sites for a living and it is my infatuation of course and is a tough addiction to break... I've had about 7 or 8 cruisers, 40s, 60's, and now onto my second 'restored' FJ55 but a project in progress... FJ60s got me into cruisers and the 'wagon-esque' aspect of these is what drew/draws me to cruisers, hence why I am here... :) I am from New York State originally. I am basically "from" the Westchester area of New York near the city (so I am well versed in this area) then my parents were divorced and I sort of lived dual lives also in Keene Valley area of the Adirondack High Peaks near Lake Placid. There I mostly drove old pickups, did lots of chain sawing, worked on hiking trails for a living, canoeing and lots of hiking, cliff jumping and river running, and lots and lots of mountain biking, and womaniznig and generally drinking a lot which of course is a blast when you are 18 :) It was a great place to grow up and I really call it home. I also went to boarding school in western Mass it Northfield Mt Hermon school which was absolutetly awesome (a near, semi-artsy but semi-jock, kind of boarding school that still had a killer education, and was a lot like college for most people there). Then I went to University of Vermont for 4 years undergrad with a degree in Cultural Anthropology.

I got into cruisers in Vermont mostly reading about them on the good old LCML email list and lusting after the many adventures and percieved adventures many were having with their Land Cruisers. I started out as a total newbie, hardcore, but especially in the last few years since I have been in Utah I have pushed my mechanical limits to as far as I am able to push them I think, including fabrication and custom vehicle building... Land Cruisers are my number one hobby, Telemark skiing (very hard and semi 'extreme' including dropping cliffs and everything - we are in Utah afterall :) ) biodiesel, lacrosse (I still play and run the Utah men's league), Fender Rhodes/Hammond Organ type Jazz/Funk music (ie Herbie Hancock, MMW, Soulive, etc), and also politics and socially liberal but fiscally conservative, libertarian, and strong enforcment of the original constitution (ie freedom) type political outlooks. I also love and drive Swedish cars, old Volvos in college, and now I drive a '92 Saab 9000 turbo that is just a complete and utter unbelievable rocket ship that I just love... I also have a great sense of adventure which is largely what brought me here to Utah and have been to all sorts of far corners of the globe but unfortunately none recently, Africa, Nepal/India, Russia and Europe, and Brazil. My mother is Brazilian and my old man is an American journalist who is consistently thrown all around the world, they literally have to staple extra pages into his passport and he is possibly one of the most well travelled journalists in America... He is also currently remarried (about 15 years now) to a Ugandan/Rwandis woman who is also great. Two brothers first marriage, three more second. All boys, and great. They currently live in Montreal while my mother also remarried also to a great guy lives in Carmel, New York, near Westchester as well in a great little wooded area that is also truly gorgous, stream flowing by her house and everything. We are not primarily weathly in fact just barely get a long I suppose as kind of a family trait. Money is not something that it tremendously important to us I suppose and generally we all try to have a pretty diverse and open world-oriented views instead of what is now becoming "American." I am currently 27 years old.

About 4.5 years ago, aftermy last great summer in the Adirondacks, I moved out here and have been loving it ever since. I do live 25 miles from the redest city in the redest state in America which is a little bizarre considering my socially liberal points of view but do love it out here, it is just gorgous.. I am currently building another FJ55 that will be 4BT diesel / Dodge NV5600 6 speed, Dana 300, all on a FZJ80 frame / axles / suspension primarily for off road and expedition type exploring. The rig is total overkill but despite some strong environmental beliefs as well I am also totally into off roading so that is a benefit of such a rig. It will also have to be lifted at least 4-6" to clear the 4BT so it will be a large rig. Last one had 35"s, this one I am shooting for 34's but will probably end up with 35"s again most likely, they worked very well with the last rig. But thrill of the build is what gets me most I suppose, hence why I sold my last Land Cruiser.. I hope to participate here a little here and there and learn quite about the great places in Utah to explore and thorughout the southwest. I am quite envous of the 80 series guys who can really haul ass on these dirt roads and do it nicely and long-distance comforable. I suppose again most of this is overkill but I hope to do the same thing with my FJ55 or 4BTJ-85 as I think I'll be calling it :)

HEre are thread to my builds, please enjoy...

Well, not only will you fit in well with your social and political proclivities, but you'll also be a shoe-in for "cool guy" candidate with your diesel Cruiser.

great thank you guys... I am a pretty busy guy between lacrosse and biodiesel so I hope I can contribute here and there but again even with some Utah knowledge I still have a lot to learn especially about a lot of these locations, so I figure I'll be mostly lurking.. :) But basicallly this is the jist of really what got me into cruisers and where I hope to head to versus mostly just off roading (which I don't mind of course but prefer exploring) so again I appreciate the warm welcome..

Welcome! Are those Volvo seats in your 55 in the above pict?? I'll have to check out the link when I get more time. I grew up in Volvos so I know what you mean. Wife has a Saab '01 9-5 SE now, nice cars! Good luck on your build. 55's ROCK!

Welcome to ExPo Andre,

...Most of all, welcome to the West!!!

I visited Northfield Mt Herman in 1994. You might have been a student at the time. I was on the faculty at Midland School http://www.midland-school.org/index.html and was east for a conference for us admin-types.

Funny too that when I was 12 I was with my parents at a "tourist home" (God, does that term date me????) in Keene Valley NY and the owner of the B&B gave me my introduction to fly-fishing. At the end of our stay, the 'old' (he was at least 50! :) ) fellow gave me the rod/reel. I still have it and use it. Unfortunately, I lost track of the gentleman over the years.

You've got some good 'stuff' in your vitae, i.e. Volvos, Saabs (can't live in the NE w/o having owned at least one of those), 'Yotas, travels, and much more.

Again, welcome. As our move to Idaho becomes imminent (6/12) maybe our paths (off-highway, of course) will cross.

Yes those are Volvo 240 seats which as you probably know are possibly the most comfortable seats out there! The leather is also very high quality but its hard to find a good set that isn't too chewed up or aged.. I've run Volvo seats in pretty much all of my last cruisers.. I think on this new one it will end up with reupholstered seats so I think I might use the swanky Toyota 80 series electric seats and probably the stock FJ55 rear.. To get them in wasn't too bad, on one side I used simple spacers that I made, on the other I had to make some brackets which took maybe an hour or two at most..

Allen thanks for the message :) I figured someone was from that area or had spent sometime in one of those places hence why I posted it :) Yes great area and great story about the flyfishing rod, too cool! Yes absolutetly great fishing, rainbow, brook, and even big old lake trout in some of the lakes up there, particularly the Ausables.. I grew up spinning mostly but have caught dozens and dozens of fish up there, sometimes its almost too easy in some places :) I would have just gotten to NMH in '94 in the fall so we might have crossed paths.. I guess I am young, graduated from HS in '97, less than 10 years ago I suppose ...

I could use some new seats in my 60, I'll have to look into some Volvo seats.

My family had an '81 245, '87 240, still has a '93 940 pushing 300K miles. My butt knows thoughs seats well. Drove the '81 for three years in High School then passed it on to my younger brother...he wrecked it :eatchicke

I'm interested in possibly acquiring a 55 so I will be following your threads with interest.

Congrats for making the move west. I nearly ended up in Rochester about 5 years ago.

It will be great to have your experience on the ExPo!

Now we need to plan an adventure to meet in person :rappel:
