AM GENERAL CORP. will start offering the rolling chassis of the H1 based on 2006 H1 alpha and up armored humvee m1114 frame platform . those will be available soon as a kit truck to put together with few diesel motor options. and trans ,

price tag? is not out yet but in 2006 H1 WAGON was 146+ without all the tax and crap out of the door $ 170.000. lets hope this one will be more affordable since it wont have that interior and paint and all that

Wonder if they would sell the ambulance shell for expedition usage.

I heard most of the old humvees go back to AM General to be rebuilt and sold back to the military. If we ever stopped being at war or giving old vehicles to our 'allies' and AM Gen would have no market for the refurbed military trucks, they would probably rotate them back to the world to be 'refurbished' as new and then gut them and sell them as 'new' C kits. Skipping the surplus process, but still making money.

I read somewhere years ago that H1's can't be sold to the public as "surplus", can't remember what the issue was.

IIRC, it was written into their contract with Uncle Sam. If I were a betting man, I'd bet it had something to do with the fact that AM General was planning on offering a civilian model and knew the general public would balk at $170,000 if they could get a surplus Humvee for half that and simply church it up some. Wasnt like the H1 had any interior appointments that you average vehicle handyman couldn't whip up on his own.

Just my take on it. You can get deuce and a halfs and five-tonners till your blue in the face, but they were never offered in civilian attire.

I would love an M-997 Four Litter Ambulance! Especially as it comes with AirCon installed! One time while dumping a load of surplus at the DRMO (Defense Reutilization Management Office) site on Fort Hood, I was speaking with one of the civilians about a crashed HMMWV chassis sitting in the yard. If I remember right, the DOT and the NHTSA haven't certified the military chassis as road legal for civilian use.

:sombrero: I just wish, since theyre going that far--they'd begin a production of the HX (H4) Hummer--

That would be a real off-road (small) 4x4-could probably go ANYWHERE !

As Matthew said it's DOT/NHTSA -- AMGeneral doesn't want civilians driving around in trucks that don't have 3 point seat belts, roll bars, collapsable steering columns or hood restraints.

here is a comparison (it's a big list, but most of the differences are very minor):

which HMMVW doesnt have a 3point seat belt? every one i've been in over the last 12 years has had a 3point seat belt. and what kind of hood restraints and roll bar do they want?

I assumed the absence of the 3 point seat belt because it was on the list and my friend's humvee doesn't have them -- maybe they do now? I know many of the things that were available on the hummer eventually made it to humvees, I guess this was one of them. The hood restraints are little brackets that keep the hood from coming into the cabin like a guillotine during a head-on collision. Some drivetrain components are also cabled. As far as the roll bars are concerned, even the ones on the hummer leave much to be desired and they are far beefier than the humvee's roll bars (if it has them at all) which seem to be primarily designed to hold the top up -- obviously not talking about hard top variants here.

I originally wanted a humvee but was afraid of the possible registration nightmare and selling it in the future. Still would love the simplicity of one.

i cant really see a fiberglass hood on the HMMWV going thru the windshield frame. seen too many busted up hoods.
