The folks at Pickuptruck.com had a chance recently to test the new Hummer H3T on the Hell's Revenge 4x4 trail at Moab. This trail is rated 4+ on a scale of 5, meaning 4 Low is required, expert driving is needed, and vehicle damage is likely.
The H3T survived Hell's Revenge without damage. The undercarriage skid plates and rocker panel protection got a workout, as you might predict from the long wheelbase.
The PickupTruck.com web site will host a movie of their Moab adventure soon.
The H3T is available from the factory with full time four wheel drive, front and rear locking differentials, a 4 to 1 low range, 33 inch tall tires, useful underbody protection. Traction control and ABS are standard. All H3Ts provide comfortable seating for four adults and a five foot long cargo bed.
The H3T has two engine options:
3.7L inline five-cylinder with 242 hp and 242 lb.-ft. of torque
5.3L V8 with 300 hp and 320 lb.-ft. of torque.
GM is planning a third engine option, a 3.6L V6 gasoline engine with direct injection, producing around 300 hp and 270 lb-ft. of torque. This engine should be lighter and have better fuel mileage than the V8. The H3 would be a good candidate for a V6 diesel as well.
The H3T dimensions are
wheelbase 134.2 in
length 210.4 in
width 85.1 in (including mirrors)
height 72.2
cargo box
59.3 x 50.5 x 19 in
ground clearance 10.2 in.
approach angle 38.7 degrees
departure angle 31.0 degrees
breakover angle 21.2 degrees
water crossing depth 24 in.
One weak point is the cargo capacity, only 1015 lbs with the V8 engine. That won't do for a trip requiring camping gear.
