H3T at Moab

The folks at Pickuptruck.com had a chance recently to test the new Hummer H3T on the Hell's Revenge 4x4 trail at Moab. This trail is rated 4+ on a scale of 5, meaning 4 Low is required, expert driving is needed, and vehicle damage is likely.

The H3T survived Hell's Revenge without damage. The undercarriage skid plates and rocker panel protection got a workout, as you might predict from the long wheelbase.

The PickupTruck.com web site will host a movie of their Moab adventure soon.

The H3T is available from the factory with full time four wheel drive, front and rear locking differentials, a 4 to 1 low range, 33 inch tall tires, useful underbody protection. Traction control and ABS are standard. All H3Ts provide comfortable seating for four adults and a five foot long cargo bed.

The H3T has two engine options:
3.7L inline five-cylinder with 242 hp and 242 lb.-ft. of torque
5.3L V8 with 300 hp and 320 lb.-ft. of torque.

GM is planning a third engine option, a 3.6L V6 gasoline engine with direct injection, producing around 300 hp and 270 lb-ft. of torque. This engine should be lighter and have better fuel mileage than the V8. The H3 would be a good candidate for a V6 diesel as well.

The H3T dimensions are
wheelbase 134.2 in
length 210.4 in
width 85.1 in (including mirrors)
height 72.2

cargo box
59.3 x 50.5 x 19 in

ground clearance 10.2 in.
approach angle 38.7 degrees
departure angle 31.0 degrees
breakover angle 21.2 degrees
water crossing depth 24 in.

One weak point is the cargo capacity, only 1015 lbs with the V8 engine. That won't do for a trip requiring camping gear.

Saw one of those in Moab this last weekend, I've never been a fan of the post H1's, but this one looked cool.

As a side note, Hells Revenge was a 4, its now a 6 (out of 10) on the new scale. For reference a completely stock Wrangler or 4Runner could complete the trail too. I'm sure its a capable truck, but its all perception ;)

1,000 lbs isn't enough for camping? WOW, you take a lot of stuff! ...or you go for a lot longer trips than I :)

I'm sure it did Hells Revenge, but that's probably without the obstacles looking at that departure angle.

I don't get it? Are they phasing out the I5 and I6? Is this 3.6L V6 their next generation 6cyl truck motor or something? And why wouldn't the truck be a good candidate for the 4.5 V8 turbo diesel? If the 5.3 V8 fits then the diesel should fit too.

Other than that, I love it.

I'd love to see Jeep make the gladiator none the less.

I gotta admit though, the dirtier and more used those mules get, the better they look. And I agree with Fly'nDrive, it may have run Hells, but I'd bet is bypassed quite a few obstacles ;)

I agree, a 2 door would be awesome! I think it's a great rig, but the wheelbase is too long, the proportions are odd.....

Clearly you sir have fat friends... ;) (says the 209lb former soccer player, my god what happened)

I find it a bit odd tha the payload max is so low as well, is it because the springs are super soft in favor of ride/flex???

i think the 2 door makes too much sense for gm to make lol i guess theyve screwed up on vehicles so many times like the aztek and the countless other fwd rebadged turds that a 2 door only exists on the carshow floor. i actually like the h3 but theres a couple things that gm could add to it that would make it perfect and why cant they with their vast amount of global resources

Already hatin' the H3T

As I read the post here I thought to myself - hmmm HUMMER may have something good going here. A truck with front and rear lockers, a tried and true V-8 and accessories that will be immediately available. WOW this could be a great rig.
BUT.............
The HUMMER bashing started almost immediately.
- Hell's Revenge is only a 6/10 not a 4/5
- I'm sure they skipped over the obstacles
- Jeep and Toyota could do better blah blah blah
Give me a break already. The H3T hasn't even hit production and guys are already trying to give reasons not the like them. Maybe if someone had personal experiences or other known facts to back up their statements one could/would believe them. Right now some guys sound like the typical ANTI-HUMMER crowd.
Yes HUMMER took a beating when the H2 was gobbled up by soccer moms and blinged out by knuckleheads. The H3 fell to similar fate at times - not quite as bad it seems. But the H3T looks like GM is headed in the right direction.
I've used this forum for information many times. I've appreciated the info given directly to me. I also have taken info that others asked for. This site is mainly a positive site. Shared thoughts and ideas and of course opinions. There are other forums that seem to promote ANTI-This or ANTI- That. Let's try not to do that here.
I'd prefer to learn about the GM 3.6 engine and what it's all about. Or if GM plans on putting the diesel in the H3 - especially since it'll fit - I assume.
SO could guys give the H3T a chance. Wait until they hit the dirt before you make your claims.
