I'd checked the pads 2300 miles ago when the tires were rotated and they looked to be better than 60%. I check them every time the tires are off as a PM item. I'd put new rotors and pads on in 2007:

While I'd noticed a bit of brake dust on the wheel, I didn't pay any attention to it since my truck rarely gets washed anyway. It didn't seem to be a lot more than the passenger side, but it was a bit darker on the stock rim. That should have been a clue. I never heard anything dragging over the good ol' MT/R's either...
The left front caliper had a piston fail to release completely.
On Friday the 13th, I heard the sound of a engine lathe coming from the left front. Metal to metal...
So, I stopped at my Brake/Alignment shop, and had the rotors turned, and new pads installed to get me home. One benefit of having to turn the rotors is that they do'm on the truck. That eliminated all the run-out in the rotor - it's now running true to the caliper.
Since Prescott is still a relatively small town so I to order a re-man caliper. I installed it with the new pads yesterday.
So, if I'd paid attention to the warning signs, I would have only had to get a re-man caliper instead of spending a day off waiting for the truck to be fixed for $200.00 and then spending another $84.00 on a caliper. I did go steal my wifes '05 Taco and take it out for a 50 mile dirt trip thru the Bradshaw's, but that cost me another $14.00 to wash it when I was done :sombrero:
