Hi,

Joining the group. I grew up in Las Vegas on wranglers and swb cruisers, and when I lived in NYC always had a swb Montero or Raider- the best NYC vehicle ever, but now have different needs.

After following these threads and not being able to find a spotless, low mileage 2.5, or 2 for that matter and not wanting a 3 because of the sunroof positioning, I have purchased an ebay import. I have probably paid too much, but for my purposes, it may be worth it.

My criterion-

I live in Southampton, N.Y. The highest hill is 350ft and there is no such thing as a technical course, but plenty of forested dirt roads and miles and miles of beautiful ocean and bay beach where it is legal to drive. I have never in any rig, needed lockers out here. And we basically have a 45mph area wide restriction, so don't need big acceleration or passing power.

After looking at all vehicle possibilities chose to go with a 90's Montero because of the huge center mounted sunroof. I am a cinematographer and am going to rig the vehicle to be able to shoot standing up in the vehicle, moving or parked.

Equally important this will be a vehicle for clients, and here is why I bought this particular vehicle. It is a very elegant looking vehicle. I am a lover of two tone paint and this one is a beauty and the leather seats and interior are spotless. It is almost impossible to find a clean 2 or 2.5. And, after having gone through redoing interiors, I wanted to pay up front for something that already was nice.

RHD. I just spent two months in Ireland driving RHD, manual shift vehicles, no problem. This has an automatic, so really no problem.

2.5 diesel. I am no mechanic and hope I am not getting screwed into an area that I know nothing about, but decided because of my particular needs it might be fine and will get better mileage. Anyway it is the engine in this beauty.

I am looking for any advice as to maintaining the vehicle and what taller tires are best for the beach, and anything else. I am going to pick it up tomorrow, and drive it home. Any advice on what to watch for when checking it out and prepping the trip?

Thanks for any advice, Scott

Welcome to the forum Scott - you weren't kidding that's a beauty, low miles - super clean - and a ton of stuff rare/unavailable in the states.

I'll defer to some of the more savvy guys on maintenance (particularly on a diesel) and set up for what you're trying to do but I will mention so far the best "mods" I've done are just basic maintenance stuff that's been neglected. In your case with how clean it is to start you may not need it, but a transmission flush was the best $100 I've spent so far.

I would highly advise a transmission flush, as this is the biggest cause of the trans failing shortly after. What he would want to is simply drop the pan and reinstall with a new filter and fluid after cleaning the magnet.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Transmission flush with the correct fluid has never hurt any of the 20+ Mitsu's I've ever owned.

Read up on power flushes, a lot of people have issues shortly after due to deposits being moved around that were just fine before. Now if you are referring to a simple fluid transfer via sucking in and draining out through the cooler lines then that is not usually called a flush and tends to work okay, it uses the normal pressure from the internal fluid pump and does not subject the lines to pressures outside everyday driving parameters.

Those champagne over brown ones are really nice, they often have a really good spec, like curtains and super plush seats.

Things to change on them is the fuel filter, and give the intercooler a good flush out with petrol, it will get all the oily sludge out, you just have to make sure all the petrol has dried before putting it back in. I've my egr blanked, and I've done a few mods to boost and fuelling, she has a lot more get up and go now. Tat engine has a belt, so it's a good idea to get that done. Flush the cooling system, these engines have a very soft head, which I imagine is a very expensive thing to get in the states.

Where in Ireland are you? Any time I talk to people over here from the states they think we are all maniacs for driving manual cars on these tiny roads, while slowing down for nothing!

Pretty truck. They sure sold some cream puff models outside of the US. Wish rear hvac was available in the US on these.
