hand winches

Does anyone out there use a hand winch? I am looking specifically at the More Power Puller. I have seen the Black Rat tirfor type, but it is very expensive imop for what it is. The power puller comes in 2 and 3 ton varieties. The only thing that concerns me is that the 3 ton model only comes with 20 ft of cable. Anyone actually use one of these things to extract a HEAVY vehicle?

and to get the full 3T pull you need to use the block, reducing the net pull to less than 10'.

I have a less expensive 2T Maasdam unit, but haven't used it. I think the tough part with using one of these (or a HiLift) is taking along a cost effective, low stretch means of connecting the puller to a tree 20 to 100' away. HiLift sells a kit using chain, but that length of chain is awfully heavy.

We bought one for tensioning cable on a Safety Barrier road project we had. The tension had to be 5275lbs. and if I remember correctly it was like $500. I thought well dang we could have bought a winch, though we did it was just a manual one, and shyt did it weigh a ton, like 58lbs. So in the less crazy situation I use my winch or Hi-lift.

I use the Tirfor style, as it is the only solution I have found to be effective and safe, principally because of the long wire length and ease of pulley fitment (due to the long length).

expeditionswest, you use the black rat model correct? What size? I have an 80 series LC so I have to take the weight into consideration.

I've used come-alongs in the past.. but not for pulling a vehicle.. but rather for securing a vehicle if its on its side on a hill or bending back a piece of metal, tie rod. etc. . I dont trust them. They scare me. I use them for light applications only.

My camper mog has a hand winch/come along with 200 feet of cable built in. Its probably heavier than a powered winch. It works, you have to use at least one snatch but it will move 15000 pounds on soft ground.

I agree with Socal, its a little scary standing right next to the wire especially with so much weight on it.

I just ordered a 3 ton More Power Puller. I read a lot of good reviews and a bunch of guys on Mud recommend them. I like the tirfors, but not for the price. I will have to get an assortment of no stretch straps and some chains to make it effective.

How about getting the wire rope removed by people replacing their winch cable with synthetic rope. Usually they'll be happy to get it out of their way. ;-)

I've used a 2t MPP for just about everything EXCEPT winching a rig out (Pull tracks on a D6, assemble excavater arms, extra shop hoist, ect) works great for all those purposes, and if you can unstuck a rig with the $19.99 ChiWanese ToolMart Special, (BTDT) then the MPP won't break a sweat

I have the 3T more power puller in my unimog.
It worked great to pull the truck about 4 feet out of a mud hole. My son winched and I drove in first gear with both lockers engaged, we grabed traction and out she came. That was with 2 cords of fire wood loaded in the back.....
The 10 foot pull was plenty, its not as fast as a powered winch but it will do the job.
It does help to have a strong teenage boy along to do the hard part.:archaeolo
