Has anyone read the article in the latest "Four wheeler"
MT tire shootout...!!!!!

Interesting and I know it is mainly advertisement but I am currently looking at new tires for my 2005 tacoma...was set to buy the BFG MTs in 235/85 but will now do some thinking...
The Hankooks got first place, MTRs second, Yokohama third I think...the KM2s 8th...
I currently have the Yokohama ATs on my Tacoma...just put the Hankook AT 10 plys on my GMC 3500 (am impressed)...
So lets hear it...I know there are plenty of you willing to take down a BFG hater but I am just interested to know what people think...Should I be looking at the MTRs/Hankooks and forget BFG...:coffeedrink:

Buy whatever tires you want; lots of people like the Hankooks, but I think from the above that you understand the wisdom of relying on an advertising piece from a biased source to unduly influence your choice.

FWIW I currently have BFG KM2's on one 4WD truck and Toyo Open Country MT's on the other, and would have no problem buying either one the next time, or recommending them to anyone else. No experience with the Hankooks.

Sounds like Hankook gave 4Wheel Parts a good deal on some tires and BFG didn't. I don't even trust the "old iron" section of that magazine - it's all tainted!

I agree with the assessment of the KM2. It's not very good in mud or snow. From my experiance they don't clean out in our caliche clay. They did balance well, and a wearing OK at 10K. I don't trust the sidewalls. They are a much lighter constructed tire than the MT/R. I air down to 22 PSi with the KM2's to get a similar sidewall bulge I had on the MT/R's at 16 PSI.

I had a set of the GoodYear MT/R Kevlars on the truck, and I rate them very high on the traction end of things. I had the opportunity to run the same roads in similar conditions with both KM2's and the MT/R's, and the MT/R's blew away the KM2's. I didn't need either front or rear locker with the MT/R's. It's unfortunate that my Power Wagon didn't like them. They cupped very quickly. I had them mounted black wall out, and perhaps that effected the wear.

I'll be looking at the new General Grabber next time.

I am not so concerned with mud being in the SW but I do want a strong tire in the snow...considering getting some dedicated studded winter ATs on my old alloy wheels...

Hankooks have been getting a lot of good press lately, and a lot of good reviews from individual users. I have Hankook ATs and like them a lot. I only have 6 months and 8k miles on them but they are solid so far.

Jason, I have nothing against mud terrains, I have them on both of my 4WD trucks. I just don't particularly trust 4wheelparts as an objective source for tire reviews.

FYI

The article was in Four Wheeler, and the tires and rims were supplied by Discount Tire/America's Tire. 4WheelParts had no affiliation with the test.

Toyo MT's

I didn't see the test results - was the Toyo MT included? I have 255/85/16 Toyo MT's on my Defender 110. I've run them two winters up here in Ontario, Canada and have been impressed with traction and how surefooted they feel. In general - good traction, stiff, heavy, hard wearing, tough.... Great for a loaded vehicle or with a trailer in tow.

I finally put my Hankook ATs on the paved road to nowhere (ie the rez) yesterday...and they are great...much quieter than the BFG ATs or Toyo ATs I had earlier...but they are new...

My bad, I read the OP and thought he was talking about "Off Road Adventures Magazine"

Well, after 2 sets of BFG ATs that I loved, and getting 70K on each set, I'm currently running Hankook 12.5 X 35s MTs. Just over 11K miles so far, one rotation, no obvious wear. Nosier than the BFG ATs (expected) but not really load. Great off road traction, far less axel hop than with the ATs...also expected.

Smooth riding and good wet road handling...haven't been in real snow yet, just on fire roads near Cool, CA but the snow on the trail was pretty limp. Mud traction is very good, they clean the voids real well!

So far, really pleased. Will update after 20K

FWIW 4 Wheel Parts doesn't carry Hankook, so its unlikely they would rate them higher than brands they sell if it wasn't true (why recommend a tire you have to go somewhere else to get), especially when they own Pro Comp Tire. We have customers come in all the time with tires we don't carry, and I always make it a point to ask them how they like them - Hankook generally gets above average reviews. I have to pay for my own tires and want the best traction & durability for the money, even if I don't buy them from work!

That takes 4WP out of the equation. There was a different magazine a couple years ago that did an AT test between the Hankook, BFG and Toyo AT's, and while they were all really close, the Hankook edged the other 2 out in that test as well, and they were the only ones with a mileage warranty (40K I believe)
