Hard to find part: Help Needed

Anyone know where you can get a universal fuel filler neck unleaded restrictor plate?

NAPA "used" to stock them. They weren't made by napa themselves but another company. I called napa and they said they no longer carry them and the guy said its been at least a year or more since they stopped. I asked them if they had a old part # and they said no. I was going to see if i can track a old one down thats collecting dust on someones shelf.

Problem is, with the smog regulation nazi's here in CA we are getting flack for not having the unleaded little door deal on our dual filler necks for our dual fuel tanks from down under.

Anyone have a source?

Is this something you could get out of a wrecking yard & adapt?

I would imagine a filler neck for a 1990's US spec Defender or a Jeep might be pretty close to generic.

Interesting issue. In Oregon, where you can't pump gas yourself, I can imagine the unemployed logger who pumps your gas being a deputized DOT inspector. (not really)

But who would possibly be in your face in CA for this issue? Ohhh, maybe you just had to go in for smogging?

Are there any more leaded gas pumps that you could possibly confuse with unleaded, or are they just thinking we're stupid enough to try to sneak diesel into the tank?

SoCal, nice find. I'll need one too but I need one that is not permanent. My dual filler neck is a different design that requires me to angle it left or right depending on which tank I want to fill (think "Y" pipe). So if anybody runs across one. Please post up. I was told I could find it at Kragens but I checked and the local Kragens didn't carry it.

You know, that is an interesting point....
And it's sort of why I asked - who's inspecting Dave's receptacles to bust him for not having the restrictor. And how can we avoid those bozos?

hey david did your vehicle have one originally.
the reason I ask is I've never heard of someone needing that to pass smog.
the fjc does not come with a flap

Cowboy, yes. .. the cruiser had one originally. Problem is, we pulled the stock neck and now are running a OZ dual filler neck. There's no restrictor. No i didn't save my old one. Or i cut just cut it out and weld it in. Not that big of a deal *(still can if i want to go to a junkyard).

The reason i brought it up is that Skillet (forum member here) is getting his smogged and is worried about failing do to this situation. Some stations will fail you on just the visual alone because you need to have one. I just wanted to see if i could track down what was needed. I get interested in hunting down oddball things :)

The other side of the coin.. is that i've heard many people say don't worry about it.. they know plenty in CA that have passed without a restrictor.

And lastly, yes i think it's very stupid that something that was created in the 60',70's for unleaded fuel is still in effect today that has nothing to do with smog.

I ran a thread on this on 'mud earlier this year, as I too have the same tank / oz dual filler neck as you. My local auto part store stocks it, it is the Pollution Controls unit you reference. I did not pick it up as you can not buy anything other than unleaded any more. Let me know how it fits. I may need it for my smog test, just coming due.

Cheers,
Cal

It's just stupidity in the whole pollution control crowd.

I agree we need to reduce pollution but things like this which have NO pollution control value are a waste of time. It's CARB maintaining their reason for existence and their budget and payroll.

My all time favorite is the California approved jerry can. Each time I've used one of those I spill WAY MORE fuel than  I would with a "normal" jerry can. I can't see how that reduces pollution?!?

 I must be.
I did that once just outside of Salt Lake City on my way home. Punched the button for regular but accidentally grabbed the green hose, filling the empty rear 18 gallon tank with diesel and a half full front 12 gallon tank with diesel. I switched over to the rear tank and and the diesel hit my petrol engine just as I hit the I-70 on ramp. A Ford 302 runs very poorly on diesel. I limped back to the gas station, looked at the pumps and realized what I did. I was used to diesel being in a separate filling pump and not sharing the same pump thingie with petrol. It was one of the first times I had encountered the two hoses side by side.

I switched to the third fuel tank that had petrol in it and drove home just on the third tank. When I got home I siphoned out the diesel into jerry cans. That was 10 years ago and I just recently ran out of diesel "parts cleaning solvent".

Sometimes when you have been on the road for a long time and you are tired, it is possible to do some real stupid things if you are not paying attention or looking for different fuel filling arangements.

Smog Check stations used to have to check that the restrictor was still in place. It's a legacy law now. No need for it, but no one wants to bother with removing it.
Don't get me started on the Autocracy known as "CARB", it's not good for my blood pressure.
