Haute Creek

Just realized we now have a specialised section here for flyfishing...I'll have to check in here more often.
Here's a tale from one of last years trips written by a client of mine.
For about thirty years I've had a love-hate relationship with Hot Creek. It's a very heavily fished but little understood stream. Being a spring creek, it can sustain a huge biomass and a big component to this biomass are trout.
I'd say it's only been in the last ten years that I've started to really get the place dialed. It'll crank huge numbers of fish in the 12" to 16" range and with a gazillion fish per mile the "average Joe" flyfisher can have a great day on this water. But, for the same reasons it can crank out the numbers, it can also crank out some monsters.
Pete's a San Diego native and so he lives in a very trout-challenged part of the state. Until about three years ago, Pete was what I termed a "destination fisherman"...in other words, he'd always assumed you had to either hop on a plane or drive great distances to get to the trout. I started running him up into some little known haunts here in the So Cal mountains and he was thrilled to find there are small waters with equally small trout...but, they were wild trout and that's what mattered to Pete. Eventually, I started taking him up into the Sierra's and into some other little known spots in central and northern Nevada. This was Pete's first year on Hot Creek....needlesss to say...he slayed! Still calls me coach.
