any heater core from a 2 - 2.5gen montero (1992-2000) should work.

You know, for what it's worth, I had a leaking heater core about 5 years ago. It was leaking into the driver side foot well and became an air freshener I, nor my passengers, didn't care for. Mechanic said it needed to be replaced and recommended against those quick fix solutions. Not having the budget nor the time, I went ahead anyway and poured in a radiator leak fix solution (the one with the glittery bits) with the intent to replace it at a later date. To my satisfaction, the leak stopped, the hot air came out of the vents hotter and I haven't had the need to replace it (again, that was 5 years ago).

Not sure if I was just lucky or if the particulars are different, but I figured I should share my experience.

I blew a headgasket and cracked a head on the Volvo in my sig...25psi and over-revved on the highway against a new Camaro SS (whoops!). I used KW Head/Block Repair to see if it would buy me some time. I ended up driving the car like that for another year...it worked for me. I was still running 18psi on it too. lol.

It's worth a try, seeing as how the heater core replacement is a huge PITA. It just depends on the nature of the leak and how bad it is. Though, I had oil in the coolant and vice-versa, and the KW stuff worked for me. Maybe a liquid repair will buy you some time at least if you don't have the means to tackle the heater core immediately.

Within an hour I got to the core

Upon closer inspection, I found the culprit hose and not the core itself. Changed it out and no leaks afterwards.

Holy moly! My compliments on the dash removal. I haven't disassembled mine completely, but even half way off, it was troublesome.

Putting it back together took much longer...
One thing I should have done when installing new hoses were to use some sealant just for extra protection.
It look just like a vehicle from the junk yard.

Thanks for the pics. Im in for the same surgery. Im hoping mine is a leaking hose as well.
I haven't had any fluid visible on the inside but when I use the heat I get all fogged up inside and the heat doesn't work.

Unless you really screwed it up it probably won't be needed. Let's face it, you're talking about a heater system that's 2 decades old and I'd be willing to be has the original hoses to/from the heater core.
