Heavy Duty Canopies / Shelters

Until I went crazy and got my KK trailer I used this Moss at the time, now MSR Outfitter's Parawing tarp:

I have had it set up in some major thunderstorms and it always held up great. I still have it but don't use it much since my trailer has more canvas shade/protection then I need.

Edit: I found some bad old pics from a wet 2005 camp.

Yeah - some guys that were camping near me at the Overland Expo had something very similar. I really liked it, but wondered if it would just become a sail in high winds.

Surprisingly they shed the wind very well. Much more than your normal rectangle shaped tarp.

You could use a North Face Docking System, canopy-style tent provides full coverage with four roll-up walls. The Dock Station has a perimeter floor "ONLY" around the inside edge. This gives the unit stability and still has an open floor if you set it up over a picnic table, etc.

Sweet! ...that might be just the ticket for me.

How difficult is it for 1 person to set up?

It's pretty easy once you do it a couple times. I've added straps and cam buckles to mine instead of the light lines it came with, it makes setting up and tightening up the canopy much easier. I use Kelty adjustable poles with my bigger canopys, they'll never bend and will last forever
I have several wings and have been very happy with those made by NRS and MSR, there are others if you need to go bigger

or the big top from Cascade outfitters.
here's my NRS wing

The MSR and newer NRS wings can be pulled pretty tight and have no problems with high winds.

btw Tucson T4R I like your shelter choices, A Moss wing and tent

I like the moat :)

Yep, it was 3 days of constant rain and water was flowing everywhere. The moat was the only way to keep our little island dry. LOL

I love that Moss tent, too heavy for backpacking unless you really need the major winter protection but it's very well made and would provide excellent protection even in extreme weather.

We still use it frequently when others join us on KK trailer trips and we need the extra tent space.
