Blog updates:Another post from packrafting the Rio Bocay

I just stumbled onto your World-wide adventures!

Reading with great interest. Going through your Bocay/Coco rafting expe brought back some super memories for me. From the early to late '90s (over a 7 year period), I trekked through the Mosquitia, from Honduras to Nica (along beach, and inland)...I then wanted to paddle the coastal areas, and paddled with a buddy (using a Greenland II Folbot, folding kayak) from Palacios, Gracias a Dios, to the Coco with the sea kayak. We also paddled the Rio Platano (Honduras), and Rio Patuca (more or less alongside the Coco river valley, however inland in Honduras Mosquitia).

I prefer to traverse the Mosquitia on water rather than on foot; however doing so on foot poses some interesting logistical issues ;-)

Your trekking through Central America via bike is lighting a fire under me to set off on a bicycle expe!!

Do you discuss (somewhere in your website) your equipment, packing it, and bike details ?

Cheers!

On edit: I found the bike details and raft info !

Silversand - That's amazing! I bet it was very different when you were there. Although it many ways, it's probably hardly changed at all! It's great to hear of other people who have travelled through that region - it's a fascinating place. I'd have loved to spend more time there...
And yeah, get on the bike! Contact me if you have any qu's, as happy to help if i can.

Helen:

I first arrived at the Honduras Mosquitia region around 1991 (the end of). Over the years, I saw a lot of social change, numerous large NGO efforts in the realm of conservation and hard and good times (ecotourism taking hold, more medical teams arriving, ever increasing hard-wood logging, ecologically minded tree farming, local vigilante "forest protection groups" being formed, etc...).

I was involved in mapping the various large protected areas (Bosawas, Rio Platano Biosphere, Tawahka reserve, etc, etc...). In addition, over a 6 year period (using 1 meter resolution remote sensed satellite data) I mapped the entire region (RAAN and RAAS, and Honduran Gracias a Dios) at a scale of 1:15 000. The maps have evolved since hurricane Mitch hit, and literally re-wrote the physical landscape of the coast (creating all kinds of coastal changes, and new river tributaries). There are several large "Private Parks" now established throughout Nicaragua's RAAN & RAAS as well...

I'll certainly contact you when I'm ready to cycle extensively (your bike and component selection to simplify potential repairs is a good strategy!)...

Cheers, S-
