Hello all Survival Stu here.

Now i have a question for you all.

I have the chance to buy a BJ40 or a HJ61 and i am new to Landcrusiers but no stranger to Toyota (previously owned a hilux and hiace) so which would you buy and what are the pro's and cons of each model?

It will be my only vehicle and i Live in Spain but plan on driving all over Europe in it.

Thanks in advance.

Survival Stu.

Welcome to the portal!

What do you plan on doing with it?

How much off road time will it see?

How large of a vehicle do you need?

Well i travel alot upto Sweden so i am after a good tourer but with the capability of off roading when needed.

I am not a hardcore off roader but i a have alot of off road experience from when i was in the Army so i know what i am doing off road but i am not like one of you hardcore American chaps in the Moab.

I am stearing towards a very nice HJ61 i have seen but what are they like maintenace wise?

You might want to post your question over on IH8MUD.com if you haven't already (Landcruiser specific site).

Since we don't get either of those fine vehicles here, I can only comment generically on the 40 vs. 60 series. I think with Landcruisers each generation loses charm but gains refinement. If I was traveling a lot, I would definitely take the 60 series (although I sold my 60 series for an 80 because I wanted even more comfort). The 40s are great, but I would think the more road miles you put on it, the less charming it gets. Plus, the 60 will have room for storage.

Sounds to me like the 60 will suit you better. I second the recommendation for www.ih8mud.com. You will find all the answers you want for both 60 series and diesel tech over there in the respective forums.

I would jump at the HJ61. The 12H-T 6 cyl turbo diesel is a really nice motor. It has enough power to get out of it's own way
Lots of space in the wagon, and at least some of the JDMs we got here in Canada came with factory cable lockers, full floaters, and air conditioning!

The 61 will be a much more civilized ride.

BJ40s are cool, but are way down on space and power - not to mention lacking niceties like power steering and brakes. Fun for wheeling and cruising, less fun for long trips imho.

Changing the oil on a regular basis, that's the only maintenance you should keep an eye on. The motor should be able to run 500.000km easily and up to a million when treated well....
