Got a text & pic message from a car dealer buddy today. It seems a truck I traded into him back in 2001 showed up on his lot today -
It's 1998 Chevy K2500 with a 5.7 ltr 350 engine, NV4500 5 speed tranny and 4.10 gears. Bench seat and no power locks or windows, Cheyenne trim level. Man, I loved that truck!
I bought it in Gunnison, Colorado in '99 and it had about 40K on it as I recall... bone stock. I paid $13,000 despite promising my wife (and my lender at the bank...) I wouldn't go over $12K. But ext. cab Chevy's were hard to find then and that one had all the right stuff. It had belonged to a local power company and had been used by a supervisor to run back & forth between Denver and Gunnison. Easy road miles... I was towing a 6 place snowmobile trailer for a large portion of the year and really wanted/needed a 3/4 ton truck. It fit the bill perfectly.
I bought a Raider topper for it, some ok rims (Eagle 589's, remember those?) Rancho 5000's & a set of 285/75/16 BFG's. I threw on a chintzy brushguard, cranked the t-bars up, tinted the windows, added some vent visors and a set of PIAA fog lights and I really thought I had a ************ truck, lol.
As much as I loved the truck, I traded it in a couple of years later when I moved to WY, and got a sales job that had me running all over the place, so I needed a fuel efficient car. It was a tough choice, because I really liked that truck and it was the 4x4 that I owned when I took my newborn son for his first lazy drives down dirt roads in the San Juans of Colorado... He's 9 now, hard to believe...
The owner of the truck, who bought it off the lot where I traded it in back in 2001, apparently stopped by today just to say hi to my friend who sold it to him. He's not trading it in and it's still running great... with 202K miles! It looks a little rougher in the lead photo that my buddy sent me, but not bad for a 12 year old truck with over 200K. I hope he'll send me another pic in a few years.
I don't think my tastes have changed too much in the last 10 years... I still like a clean, understated looking truck that's more about the function than the farkle... I still like Chevy's over the other big two... and I still like to take lazy drives down lonely dirt roads with my son... and his baby sister. It's just like they said back when it was new - "Tried, Tested and True."
