Subaru probably has as much room inside as the Xterra does. Lots of both around here, all models driven by men and women alike.
Both seem like pretty good rigs.
Subaru would be generally cheaper to maintain. For one thing, consider the cost of replacing tires. You could probably get more rig for the buck with it too. Shop around and see what comes up. Maybe there's a nice, inexpensive Xterra out there waiting for you. Look at Consumer Reports and other sources to make a longevity comparision.
For either model, you might want to go with a manual transmission at that price range to avoid a potentially expensive time bomb.
