Help me pick my first 1st Gen (Cummins) truck!

Easy. Fix the odometer.

The idea that you don't know how many miles are on the truck when you buy it (or sell it) is the only piece of the puzzle you need to consider. In the example where it broke with 300K miles, who cares? It wouldn't be worth any more with 275K miles, or any less with 325K miles. It makes no difference anymore, as long as it's a decent truck. You could buy a 150K mile truck and have a $2K injection pump failure tomorrow, or buy a 350K mile truck that was well maintained and not need a thing for another 100K. There are no guarantees either way.
The question is, would you have to pay $2K more for the 150K mile truck? Probably. Would you "get" to pay less for a 350K mile truck (or TMU broken odometer?) Probably.
So which is the better value?!?!?!?

This is GREAT advice and should be heeded. Also, shot odometers are a different story, but again, depends on how the truck was maintained.

Thank you Kaisen, this is GREAT wisdom! :) However, the general perception when it comes to resale value is that a truck with very high miles is worth much less than one with lesser miles...and that's a point to consider when you are investing a substantial amount in a purchase. But as far as reliability and use that you can get out of a truck, I totally agree with your refreshing view. That's a great reminder to always keep in mind... THANKS!!

Tomorrow afternoon, I guess I'll be looking at a former co-worker's 92/93 D250 diesel. He says to come make an offer, better mileage than my Ramcharger. So...you're thread got me thinking too. :ylsmoke:

Put the 12 v in your Ramcharger and never look back!

I'm glad you were inspired by it...let us know what you got and at what price if you do! :)

Never having driven one of the Cummins trucks, I don't know if hype heightened my expectations or if the individual truck is slow (??). Warmed up, the throttle response was kind of lacking as compared to the Ramcharger and the other gas Dodge trucks I've driven. This one is an early 92 non-intercooled truck with an automatic trans and 3.5 gear ratio. I was not able to do a highway run, and I suspect that is where the truck would be better suited than around the block and stop lights. There is not an associated price yet, pending his investigation of Kelly Blue. We'll see tomorrow when he calls. :coffee:

The 12v Cummins is NOT a fast truck in stock form. You can wake them up very easily for little to no money by doing pump tuning etc. With the VE pump on your 92, a Denny T fuel pin will be a big help.

Maybe this requires a new thread to be started on your truck so there is no confusion?

It's a beautiful truck, though priced higher than my budget allows... One thing I've learned these past couple of months is to not offend sellers who feel they have a very definite idea of what their truck is worth with offers too below their expectations. Sometimes their expectations are well founded, like in this case (truck in Chico..the truck is definitely worth the $7K asking price), and sometimes they are not, but in either case it is to no avail to try and change their minds, it'll just enrage them. Let me know if your coworker makes up his mind one of these days. In the meantime, I'll keep busy looking, mostly at local deals. Thanks..
