Hey Taco guys & gals, what's a fair price on a pretty clean 2000 Tacoma 4x4, 5-speed, 4 cyl, 120K miles, extended cab, about 1200 lbs of black lab fur :)

No info on maintenance, except that knowing the owner, it's pretty well cared for, but not meticulously.

I'm assuming there is tons of info on the different power-plants, so I'll plan on searching for info on the 4 cylinder to see if it's something to stay away from.

thanks.

EDIT: don't know whether 2.4 liter or 2.7 liter. will find out ASAP.

Not to be a wise guy, but what can it be bought for? Take KBB or Edmunds and start from there. My $.02.

That is a solid truck. I bought my 2002 Tacoma v6 5spd 4x4 extended cab Non-TRD with 108k miles back in March for $10,000.
I would say go with Kelley Blue Book value. That number is always the one that I trust.
As far as the engine. You have the 2.7l because it is a 4x4. The 2.4l only came in the 2wd 5-lug Tacomas. That 2.7l 4cyl is a great engine. The 4x4 with the 4cyl engines usually come with 4.30 gears factory, there are some exceptions.
The only problem that I would say about that truck is the 2.7l 4x4 transmission. It is still a great transmission but it can't take as much abuse as the v6 transmissions can. With regular offroad use expect to have to eventually rebuild it.
I say buy the truck if it meets KBB price or lower, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks,

Joseph

Personally, I like having a little more power. The 4-cyl is a great engine, but I prefer the 3.4L V6. I have hauled in a 96 Tacoma 4-cyl and although the engine had the power to do the job, there were some sketchy parts. This Tacoma I have is my 3rd 3.4L V6 and NONE of them gave me any problems. One was even supercharged for ~130k miles. The MPG difference isn't that drastic, either. With stock tires, I was getting around 21-22 MPG on the highway and ~17 around town. The 4-cyl should be around 24MPG freeway and 19 around town. Go for a 6-cyl, IMO.

A price for comparison is my stock 2000 extra cab, six cyl, 4x4, TRD with rear locker, Leer cap with 130k...which is ready to sell.

I'll probably be asking $6500 and hope to get a fairly quick sell. The front suspension is shot and it needs two front tires because of that but other than that, it's in good shape with all of the maintenance history available on paper.

I wanted to comment on the bolded portion of your post. Both the 2.7 and the 3.4 use the same A340F transmission. There is a minimal difference in the number of splines between the two versions. If you search A340F posts under my username in the TTORA forum, I've posted up the known differences. But IMO the two transmissions are very similar. With that all said, My 4x4 conversion was done with the 3.4 4x4 transmission - It did require swapping the bellhousings and I used the 2.7L torque converter.

If you have information otherwise, I'd be interested in reading what you have to say...

I was actually unaware that they used different transmissons. I also post over on CustomTacos.com and I was told that they used different ones. I had a transmission problem and they all assumed I had the 4cyl engine. When I said that I had a 6 they all got stumped. Hmm, nevermind my previous statement.
Buy the Tacoma!
