Hello all,

You guys are really helpful and i appreciate all the knowledge you provide.

I am needing some direction in finding a pulley puller for my crankshaft pulley.
I'd rather buy than rent cause this is probably the third time I've had to do this now.

Where can i find a cheap puller to get my crankshaft pulley off?

I'm not sure which style i need so this is why i'm asking.

thanks :sombrero::ylsmoke:

Hmmm. I don't remember needing a puller for either Gen I nor Gen II. Are you doing a different vehicle? Our perhaps instead of crankshaft pulley puller, you meant a pulley stay tool? If so, I bought two chain wrenches from harbor freight that worked well to hold the pulley in place while I unbolted it.

I couldn't get my off without a puller. Ill rented two pullers from auto zone and made my own hybrid that got it off.

i haven't really tried pulling mine off cause i figured i'd need a puller. i know it won't just slide off though.. hmmm.

can i just bang the **** out of it to get it off? will it harm anything?

Mine just slid off, too. No puller needed.

I wouldn't hit it with a hammer.

If it doesn't slide off, spray the area where the balancer fits over the crank nose with penetrant and let it sit for a day.

Don't hit it with a hammer. I think there was a picture floating around somewhere of Euro Sonics harmonic balancer that had puller chips on it. I thought that was strange because mine practically fell off on its own once the crankbolt was removed.

Assume you have a 3.0l. I didn't need a puller either. Only an anti-rotate holder as others have mentioned. Hammer wouldn't be recommended. An anti-rotate holder can be made cheap. I used some aluminum bar stock and 3 bolts.

i had to use a 3 jaw puller on mine as well. just be careful not to break the edges of the balancer...make sure the claws/lips of the puller are broad enough that they are touching more than just the very edges of the harmonic balancer/pulley if you go that direction. if you go penetrant...try to use something other than wd40

ok ok i got it. i was whacking it with a rubber mallet earlier, hope i didn't screw anything up. So i'm pulling on the pulley and i can see the gear behind it moving with the thing, i'm only able to pull it out about a quarter inch by hand. is that gear supposed to be moving in and out like that?

loosened up the timing belt and just pulled it out. thankfully i didn't rent a puller before this. Duhhhhhhhhhh. easy does it. thanks for all the help once again! now i've gotta take the heads off and clean everything, new seals/gaskets & water pump.

Oh good for you. Note to self: If this question comes up again, ask if the timing belt has been removed or not. It seems like the tension from the timing belt was enough to make it difficult to remove the harmonic balancer.
