Help with Jeep purchase

Latest body style is probably the best yet. Trail Edition is the one to look for.
The price limit for his purchase would only cover the down payment on that!

I love my XJ but if I was going to replace it I think I would hunt down an Overland WJ with low miles. Should be able to find one under your budget.

There are lots of soccer mom grand Cherokees around Seattle. That's what I had before the JK. Look for one that has been on craigslist for several weeks. The soccer mom usually has bought the new rig and is eager to sell. Good Luck.

I've had a TJ, XJ, WJ and now a JK.

The room and comfort of the WJ is awesome, however they are pretty complex vehicles. Mine was plagued by the blend door failure, i had to replace the engine (I-6) due to a cracked piston skirt and had a few overheating issues (some WJ's have a mechanical fan as well as electric). I regularly hit 20 mpg unloaded with mine. Sold it when the trans started shifting funny at 180K miles.

The XJ is less refined, but there is a reason they are so popular. Tons of them, easy to modify and dirt cheap. My XJ normally wouldn't break 18 MPG on 31's. Its also a little shorter and not quite as comfortable to sleep in as a WJ.

All depends what you want.

jk all the way

4 door I carry 3 are dogs 2 goldens and a bernese mtn dog, plenty of room form me my tent my wife and camping gear plus more option for offered than you can ever even imagine, but does depend on your budget and what you want to do also. like taking the top off or just the sides windows, and what kind of trails you want to explore. That is the thing I never have to ask myself if I get in Can I get out. add a j30 top too it and there you have it a smaller more capable substitute for the sports mobile, That being said the Fore runner with the trail package is pretty nice too. rear locker a-trac heated seats etc. but then on the rubicon you get dual lockers and can get heated seats leather or on my ancient 2008 just add heat to the seats

depends on the trails and also your budget..,and what else you want to do.

I love my Liberty CRD, but the diesels can be pretty hard to come by, Jeep only made them in the US for two years. I'd say a JKU or WJ would be your best bet. XJs are a solid choice too just beware of them electrical gremlins!

I would love to see more Liberty CRD builds.
A buddy of mine had one, and took it quite a ways into the Rubicon trail, before turning around and coming back out. A lot of the Jeepers on the trail were pretty surprised with it's capabilities.
Granted, he's a great driver, but still, it's a competent vehicle.

I'm biased, but I've had two ZJs out of ~24 vehicles, and both have been my favorites. Don't expect more than ~15 MPG average, but I think it makes up for it in comfort and amenities, as well as dependability.

Ive owned 2 XJ's, a TJ, a WJ, a JKU, and a '14WK.

The WJ was, and still is one of my favorite vehicles ever. Great both on and off road and the 4.7 handles everything from interstate to dunes well.

I'll admit that I was always curious about the 5.9 zj's though.

After an exhaustive search, many test drives, comparing purchase price, resale value, safety, capability off road, and gas mileage, I eventually settled on getting a used 4Runner in the 2006-2009 range. Turns out, I could not find a decent 4Runner in that age range with low-ish miles for a reasonable price. 90k miles base SR5's, often needing tires would fly off the lot for $23k. Considering the extremely high resale values, even after 10 years and nearly 100k miles, we just drove home in a 2016 Trail. Nearly bought a Trail Premium, but the one we were looking at also had KDSS which I am not convinced I need, and that plus the Premium really jacked up the price, plus I understand it complicates even mild lifts. In any case, my wife and I are really excited!

Thanks again for all the input.

Cheers,
DJM
