Wow, that is one really Cool and Nice looking Van, man I'm jealous. I just got back from SEMA yesterday (Vegas) and my E350 Powerjoke (5.9 Cummings swap on it way) always does better on the way down, rather on the way home (SLC), I only got 17-18 mpg running 78mph for the complete trip! Now I know that a lot of you are going to jump and say that good, but I have done a lot to even get that. So on your van I think 16-18 is going to be killer! Killer find and can't wait to hear/see more on portal! Keep it coming.

DragRag,

I just did some research on "Gear Venders" after reading about your find. I was wondering if you could tell me what the Gear Venders System is like in the "real world". Are the shift's faster, RPM's drop a lot less between shifts, keep the power in the heart of the torque range, etc... What I was reading on there website makes sense, but I would rather hear it from someone who actually own's/uses one. I understand that it's brand new to you but your first thought's on it would be great. As I stated in my earlier post I have spend a lot of time and money trying to improve my MPG and this my be the final thing to throw at it.

Thanks, and again what a "Killer" find!

Well, I do drive and F350 with the E40D, so I can compare the two overdrives. In short the gear vendor can be shifted in two different way. You can switch from Auto to Manual in the cab. There is a second switch on the floor that looks just like the high beam switch for the lights. This van being 4.10 geared is pretty low, so I don't drive without using the gear vendor at all on road. I leave it in the auto position will cruising the streets with the kiddies inside. BtW, they love it, and so do all there friends. On the power end if not accelerating heavily it will kick in around 43 mph with a fairly smooth shift, but you can feel it. These units do not shift slow. When accelerating more heavily it shifts faster and harder. it is not neck breaking, but fast and firm. It feels like a trans should shift from the factory, but never does. Compared to my E40D truck the gearvendor shifts much faster and firmer, makes my E40D looks lazy. The RPM's drop is significant but not obscene, seems to be right were it needs to be. I would need to record the exact drop to let you know that. Let me know if you want that info.

The NP205 will likely have a different bolt patter on the back to hook it up. The gearvendor itself will be exactly the same, they do sell different adapters for different applications and manufacturers. If you find one for a steal just get it, you can get the adapter later. If course if you get the correct adapter with it that would be great to, but just know that any gearvendor will work.

Spency, no mods to the tank were needed the way it looks to me. I'd say it's a bolt and play install. I would not want to daily drive this van without it. Or, I would have to change to 3.55's, the 4.10 are just to low geared without a gearvendor. I will be trying out a set of 285/75R16 in place of the 31's that are on it now also. I'll post pics of those when bolted up. I already have them on Factory Ford 8 lug alcoa's, one of my favorite wheels.

Thanks for the compliments also, I'll let you know the latest recorded MPG's with the larger tire when I can. I also need to fix the injector return line leaks, that will certainly help also. I am hoping for at least 18mpg highway after the work is done. I'll try keeping it at 65mph to, that should help.

Was paying attention to the RPM's last time I drove the Quad. The gearvendor engaging is worth about a 500 RPM drop according to my tach. The van does need a little larger tire, it still tachs fairly high with the O.D. on. I am going up a couple tire sizes to slow the engine down a bit on the highway. I can't imagine driving this van without the gear vendor, it would scream on the highway at high speeds.

now ya know the 6.9's are a relatively high rev motor right?

the govener keeps them to 3500/3800...but they will run at that all day long...

I jumped from a 8-16.5 (29x8) to a 235/85/16 (31.5x9) and it cost me a bit in the power due to the engine powerband...but the turbo took care of it...:sombrero:

on the highway..its just fine...but 75-80 is pushin it...

And that is what I was driving that day 75-80. I think I was at about 2800rpm in that range. I am at 2000 RPM doing 60 mph. I have the banks on there, so I think I will be OK with bigger tires. I am going to 285/75R16. I put my tape measure on them and they are 31.3 inches tall, and are half worn. I'm guessing they were maybe 32" when new. I have more fender well then I want also, so the tires should fill them nicely. Hopefully they do not rub on the front bumper, I may try and boost the front a bit if they do.

I had to do a tad bit of trimming on the lower fenders and the bumper to run the 285-75-16, but now they clear without an issue and I didn't notice any reduction in mileage going from 235-85-16 to 285-75-16 (32x9 to 33x11). I'd highly recommend the switch. The extra clearance is great, and they "look" right.

Thanks for the info, I really don't want to do any trimming. Mine measure a little smaller then yours do, maybe I'll be lucky and not have to trim!

You'll have to trim if you want 285's on a stock Quadravan lift. There is no way around it. You may get away with a 1" lift block in the front, but even then I think you'll rub during a compression turn. Cutting really isn't a big deal.

OK, thanks for the info. I have the wheels and tires on another truck so I'll let you know how it turns out. Maybe my wheels have a different offset, and will help some. Wishful thinking of course, I'll check your pics again to see how it will look in advance. Your van was my inspiration on finding one of these older quads. You have done some pretty nice stuff there.

Terrific find. I'm jealous of your Gear Vendor multiplier you got for "free", it's the one "not cheap" upgrade I've been wanting to have for my rig.

I am taking delivery on a truck with a gear vendor today. It is a divorced unit so it works on any vehicle. I will be parting the truck if interested. It is a Ford 6.9l, and has a banks turbo also.

Just wanted to report back that I have a set of factory Ford Alcoas on the van now with 285/75R16 all terrain tires, and they do not rub at all, and it is not even really that close. Apparently the shorter E250 is lighter the yours spence, and sits a little higher. I will take a pic and post when I get a chance later today if possible. The larger tires are really helping me out with the 4.10 gears. I will do another mileage trial to see what that does to full economy. I have fixed my fuel leaks to, so the mpg should be up.

Just stumbled on to this thread, hey dragrag, looks like you found a real diamond-in-the-rough, I had been looking for something like your van for about 6 months and finally gave up but did find a local 89 clubwagon with a 5.8L gasoline engine. It looks alot like yours but its not a 4x4 or diesel. Mine had about 99k miles and had been sitting for 4 yrs . It did not pass smog at first but after a couple of weekends and alot of elbow grease and alot of $ (of course), I got it running decent and able to pass smog. I see your in Hollister, you might see me passing through on the weekends to go to HH (Hollister Hills) with a rail trailer and at least 1 dirt bike on it. If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for your van ? I paid $1200 and then put about $200 more into it for parts. If I can get a couple of good road trips out of her, I'll be more than happy.
Congrats on the vehicle !
Jerry
