Good read Haven. This problem is extrememly common
Registering your most important images is a great way to go IMO along with all of the preventative measures like images size, watermark, etc. Registering your images BEFORE a problem arrises can be the difference between a leg to stand on and not... As for the Creative Commens idea, I generally say no, although if it is for the right cause I will agree to it with adaquate recognition.
