Wow 899 and you assemble it or a couple hundred more and they'll assemble and test it... That's crazy.

My last trip was up the James Bay Road in Quebec. The next one will hopefully be the Trans Labrador Highway. I need to reach out 100 to 200 miles plus.

Ok, just wondering. Sounds like a 857 May be for you then!

I considered the KX3 before going TS-480, primarily a budget issue. I wanted a rig that would be both mobile and base so yes, the KX3 is expensive when your "done" (would need amps, ....) But RX/TX quality is on the high end and it is a SDR architecture. SDR is much more extensible for projects. There are more SDR's becoming available each year. I would think all radio's will be SDR in a decade or so.

What about the Icom 7000 or even 7100 (the latter is down to $1000 so within at least an order of magnitude cost-wise)?

I'm also wondering about antenna options, which seems an even more daunting choice. I'd only use something like the 857/7000 in 2M while in transit, if I did use it, but I'm wondering about a good antenna set up for camp. I'm new to HF although I've been licensed for a while, so I'm not even sure which bands would be most often used on the road.

Traveling I use the travel/hailing frequency of 146.520 and or 446.000 in Death valley I have spoke with quite a few on the 146.520. I use Interstate 15 traveling to Montana and there is a I-15 inter-tie where repeaters are linked together and folks can chat from Vegas all way up through Idaho Falls.
You will discover different networks as well such as all star with it I can be in a hotel room on laptop and connect into my hometown repeater anywhere there is internet connection. Lots of options there and also echolink.

The ATAS120a is a good compromise Antenna for the All Mode 857D. I have done plenty of decent contacts with it, even Croatia. Antenna placement is more important. While it offers a major convenience of not needing a tuner, my main concern would be having it freeze up someplace like Alaska, I am just not sure how it will work in winter, someone else with experience may have an idea.

You can easily split and use it only for the HF, and do a separate 2m antenna.

I have had a 480HX, 857, ic 7299 and now a ic 7000 in the truck. I also have a KX-3 for portable use. I'm liking the 7000 in the truck.
